£10k award to a chap who spent 6 weeks on a religious pilgrimmage and subsequently gets booted out of work following a disciplinary.

Used 5 weeks of his allowable jollies plus a week unpaid.

All in the name of new legislation outlawing religious discrimination at work.

I can scarcely function, my fury palpable.

What foul lunacy is going to be unleashed on Albion when Billy and his wyfe's barmy army get their grotesque mits on 4 more years in the chair? Where the f@ck will it end?

The guy was a muslim and the holy site Mecca.

Father in Law swore to god that he'd walk on his knees up to the mountain shrine in Sicily if the local saint gave him a daughter, sister in law was duly borne and Father in law took the bus, it was quicker.
Someone should've suggested same to this chap and the whole ugly mess could've been avoided.
Unless it was in Colchester, busses are always late.
Cheers
Dave

Seems the man never received a response and went on his jollies regardless.

Certainly isn't discrimination of any sort

If anyone else just went awol for 6 weeks, I would expect them to be fired too.

They didn't reply though, so sod them. If I was muslim matey, I would have "just gone" as well. Probably treated like scum in a scummy job as well.

Pulling the religious intolerance card is a bit below the belt though. The sooner we get rid of religion, the better. Blairs lot should ban it.

Not enough info here. His employers did not say why they did not respond to his leave requests.
No surprise perhaps they are now in administration.

Funny that - saw the title of this thread and just knew that it had to have been instigated by Derestrictor...

The case for unfair dismissal may have been fair enough if he has proof that a manager told him to assume that his request was granted if he heard nothing. However, I can't for the life of me see what it's got to do with religion. The same situation would have existed if he'd buggered off hang-gliding for 6 weeks as far as I can see!

Could come down to the reason they gave for dismissing him.

My thinking is it won't, not soon, not ever. Like a malignant tumour that knows no bounds, all this rot is beyond repair.

I wonder if a catholic going AWOL for 6 weeks on a pilgrimage to, say, Lourdes, would have got 10 grand...

cant see what your problem is.

If you read the actual story, he put his request in writing and got no reply, so his manager said it would be ok.

Therefore he was justified to go to tribunal.

However, if your complaint is that he should have won his claim, but not on religious discrimination grounds, then fair enough.

Compensation, please, Mr Blair.......
