Ellen MacArthur - How Brilliant Is That!
Discussion
It's not the most impressive record ever, it's more to do with luck in having the right wind than human achievement. I know there is a lot of skill in using the wind available but it's not the same. Would you rather say you could jump the highest, run the fastest or you got better wind than the other bloke so you beat him?

Typical from an Impreza driver
. She's a god damned 21st century hero - and we need a few of them in this day and age!

Some people...
Her achievement is great, it takes a lot of talent, dedication & sponsorship cash to do well in that field.
It also attracts a pretty unique sort of individual, the long distance singlehanded sailors I have met make loners look gregarious. Sometimes they are not the best adverts for the sport they represent & the media is rarely sympathetic to that, expecting (and being dissapointed) if they are anything less than Akabusi-like in their enthusiasm

Load up your car with all the tools you think you need, then spend two months driving it to China and back, twice, with only you doing any necessary repairs on the way. Oh, and you're not allowed to sleep more than half an hour at any time. Obviously, driving a car would remove the dependancy on having the right wind, so it should be a piece of pi**.
By your argument, surely running the fastest is a question of 'lucky genes'.

I'm getting myself confused with the chris moyles thread of a similar (the same) subject. Anyway, I do feel a very large slice of luck is required and I don't think it's as amazing as people believe. I would rank someone like Paula Radcliffe more highly than I would Ellen MacArthur.
You are typical of what is wrong in Britain today. Never give credit where credit is due. Go to her website and look at the archive of her trip. Look at some of the videos. Then, if you have a brain, you will learn respect.
