Chaps,

I'm about to experience the pleasure of two evenings in Dundee. This evening and tomorrow evening. On my own - solo business trip.

Any ideas what is worth doing in the city? I'm going to be without a car, so good things to do will have to be either taxi-ride-close, or walkable.

(Of course, if there happen to be any PH'ers who are nearby and fancy a pint, that would be a welcome distraction!)

The best thing about Dundee is leaving.

Used to have a big city centre drinking problem back in the early 90's, but to be honest I don't know what it is like now. Its a fair size though so there must be something to do.

Well I grew up in Dundee - if you're going out for a drink I'd recommend heading down the Perth Rd. It's a bit more studenty and genteel than the townie centre. Broughty Ferry (2 miles away) has some nice bars too.

I have to ask though - do you have a southern accent? Or indeed any grasp of pronunciation? If so, stay in the hotel. For your own safety. I remember silencing a pub in a western stylee when I ordered a pint on my last visit.

Alright I'm being overly harsh and there are some very nice Dundonians. If you bump into a Welsh/Scottish/Russian sounding woman, tell my mum I say hi

Where are you staying?

best thing about dundee (scumdee) is the road out.

i suggest, assuming you're in a hotel, to proceed to the bar and remain there before an early night.

it is a rough place and has few decent bits. at least places like glasgow have good bits and bad bits. dundee is really pretty grim.

Just to echo everyone else's advice the hotel bar would be my choice of drinking if I had the misfortune to visit Dundee again on my own.

Or St Andrews - it is an outpost of England after all.

Personally I'd get lashed and mosey down to the Mardi Gras (or Manky Bra as it's known locally). The area's top nitespot

I must say the place is improving rapidly though. Since it became the cancer research centre for Europe a lot more money has been flowing in.

You can have a look at the weather, talent, etc on this webcam:

Oh, and apparently the bar in the City Quays is nice. The Rep was always alright too.

The best bars I went to last time were the Arts Centre on the Perth Rd (think that's what it's called) and the Social on South Tay St just off the Perth Rd (a rip off of the Social in the West End but not bad actually).

Where are there so many people milling around the city centre at this time of day and not at work?

Whosh! Just logged on in the hotel room (Queens), and looked at Email, and there was a stack of replies to my thread.

"Brilliant", thought I, "Lots of friendly PH'ers, all writing about the fantastic locale and the veritable stack of entertainment on offer."

How wrong was I? Given that I am fairly English, with a fairly English accent (and Mrs Zcacogp takes the rip out of me for being Public School), perhaps I'd better leave my university scarf in the hotel room and venture no further than the hotel bar ... thanks for the advice!

(Slightly tempted by the Arts Centre next door - chap at reception told me it was worth a visit. Might catch some arty-farty film to while the evening away with. Or may just value my front teeth - by the sounds of it - and stay in.)

Still, thanks for the responses. Roll on Friday - and my own bed. Business travel is, without peer, the most over-rated thing I have ever come across. Heigh ho.

I thought that's what you did to an off-colour dog?

Or used to describe the late-evening activities of a pissed West Country farmer.

Well, If I wasn't 400 miles away in Rutland I'd have given you my number and met you up the Perth Road. Would have been OK, your English, I'm a Weegie they would never have figured out who to hit first!!

The prospect of an even half-friendly Weegie nearby would be a better prospect than a scrap with no mates ... <still in hotel room, thank heavens for the interweb and PH!>

What did you get up to then? You should have been safe enough on the Perth Rd. Oh, Raffles just up the road is quite good. When I was a student up there most of my mates were Anglais and they liked to hide out in Raffles, Laing's, the Globe, the Rep and O'Neill's. Howies is a good little restaurant too. You'll find all these places within a 2-minute walk. Nip down South Tay St (almost opposite your hotel) and you'll find the Social, the Rep, and a load of alright bars at the bottom of the road to the left. You're in student territory there so you'll be fine.

LotusLad,

Thanks for asking, and the advice.

I ended up eating in the hotel (fappin' ghastly restaurant - "Nosey Parkers"!!!) and ventured to the Contemporary Arts Centre bar. Fine apart from the fact that it seemed to be populated entirely by leftie sandalistas. Perhaps that's contemporary artists for you ... and their beer wasn't cheap either.

I may be more adventurous tonight, after all I don't have to get up early tomorrow (fly back at 11.00am.)

Suggestions for somewhere better to eat would be most welcome though. Call me a food snob if you will, but microwaved pastry was never quite my thing!

ETA: Ideally, I would find somewhere that can serve good food and good beer, with a wide-ranging selection of single malts at less-than-eye-watering prices to round it all off with. Any such an establishment within ... oh, let's say 30 seconds walk from the Queens?

Eye watering prices? A Londoner complaining about Dundee bar prices

They had to call the emergency services when I was charged £8 for a V&T in the Sanderson. And when that hotel on Hyde Park Corner charged me that for a bottle of beer I fainted clean away.

Have Dundee bars become pricey since I left? Must be to cover my loss of custom
