OK....without wishing to start a slanging match between Spectrum and Commodore 64 owners, or Amiga and ST afficionados....

What were the great games that had you saving your pocket money ( or more likely pirating) in your youth?

I had a Commodore 64 first, and remember Revenge of the Mutant Camels, Paradroid, Thing Ona Spring, Monty on the Run, Crazy Comets and or course Elite.

And I read Zzap! Magazine.

Over to you....

Zzap 64 magazine, edited by Julian 'Jaz' Rignall who is now a big noise in the Gran Turismo world...

Blimey, that takes me back.

Way of the exploding fist and The Last Ninja anyone?

Elite was the best game by far IMO.

Anyone know if there's an up to date version for the PC?

Actually, didn't Gary Penn edit the mag and Jazzer was head reviewer?

IK+ mean anything to you?

No, most recent is Frontiers - First Encounters.

But David Braben is working on a staggering new version apparently.

The Elite/Frontiers games are without a doubt the best ever written by far IMHO.

Dragon64 with tape drive !! Can't remember the name of the game but it was quite fun to play despite taking over 2 hours to load the game up.

And what about Amstrad CPC owners eh?

I had Buggy Boy on mine which was cool. As was X-Type, which had top graphics for a shoot em up of that time.

Also remember playing my first "graphical" adventures at that time, such as The Pawn. It was very dull though.

Hard Drivin' was also top quality.

God, need to go and get it out of the attic now. So many memories.

I was a Spectrum bod. Used to read Crash magazine, what an odd name for a computer mag!

Have fond memories of Jet Pack, Attic Attack, Sabre Wulf and all the 'Ultimate' stuff

"Exile" on the BBC Micro was a stunning achievement - used the thing to the max, and would gobble up sideways RAM too.

Again on the BBC Micro: Revs. Best driving simulator around at the time.

Acorn Archimedes: Zarch. Impossible, but beautiful to look at!

I was a Spectrum lad.

Used to read "Crash" and played Maniac Miner, Jet Set Willy, Elite*, a lot of Ultimate games including Jet pack (of course), but I played a lot of adventure games too.
Anyone remember "Bored of the Rings"? Classic.

(* - actually, I can't remember whether it was the Spectrum or the PC that I played Elite on. But I played it a lot. I think it was on the PC though, now I come to think of it)

ULTIMATE: Play The Game were awesome in their day - and for a long time produced only for the Spectrum.

Atic Atac or SabreWulf anyone?

My best friend had too brilliant games on the Commadore: Robocop and some Michael Jackson game, though I can't remember the name of it!

On the mega drive:

Pete Sampras Tennis, the original and the best.

NHL Hockey '94

Lotus Elan Challenge

All classics, on a classic console

I didn't know there was a new version coming, I've wasted some serious time on that game.

My favourite early games:

Stunt Car Racer - Spectrum
Frogger - Acorn

I loved manic miner as well as various random flight sims that I used to play all the time.
