How many people on each shift? is it 10? or are you talking about only employing 10 people in total?
To cover a single job 24/7 you can get a 37.5 hour week with 5 people.. It involves a 35 day cycle and means each person working only 21 out of those 35 for 8 hours per day. (NOT 21 days in a row). They do need to work about 5 days per year overtime to cover summer holidays. The same amount of men can work 12 hour shifts and cover it on a 24/7. Still a 35 day cycle and still 37.5 hours. They then work only 14 days in 35.
If you're interested I could send you details when I return to work on Monday.

Christ - a request for smething I actually know about!

8 guys, 8 hour shifts. Day/Early/Night.

Convince them to work a shift pattern of 7 on 4 off 7 on 3 off. Doesn`t take much persuading - they get a long weekend every third week. And taking 7 days leave gives them 14 days off.

Out of your 8 guys, you will always have 2 days, 2 night, 2 lates and two off. If you have two groups of 4 and stagger the start times for the two groups, you will always have someone at least 4 hours from the end of shift.

If you want an excel sheet, email me.

Averages out at a 36(ish) hour week.

My system has them working 7 on 2 off 7 on 2 off 7 on 10 off . Then it starts again
Also remember, depending on the process. anyone taking days off needs someone to cover for them if it's an essential 24 hour process.

21 days work for 12 days off (paid I hope ) - I`ll have some of that.

I do 2 days (12hr) then 2 nights (12hr) then 4 days off, I think its great, but then ive worked shift for 30 years and you do seem to get used to what ever pattern you are working.

I know plenty of blokes who'd hand in their notices, including me, if presented with that rota.

Remember it works out to a 37.5 hour week. It also covers a job 24 hours per day 7 days per week. It means some people are working Christmas day ETC.
If you're in a 24/7/365 system, then you can have a shift pattern like that.
Towman. The days off are paid/not paid. You get paid monthly for working a 37.5 hour week, same as a lot of people. you just work on different days from a 9-5 office worker. On that system you work 3 weekends in 5, now the new system we're on means we only work 14 days in 35 and only work 2 weekends in 5. The downside is it's 12 hour shifts. Still only a 37.5 hour week
I should add it's a "continental" system, so it's not 7 of the same shifts in a row, it's a mix of all 3.

We're just about to change to 5 shifts.
You would have 2 people per shift working 2 day's, 2 nights and 4 off for 8 weeks followed by 18 day's off!
It's a 10 week cycle and you get alot of time off but everything is covered 24/7

I work shifts too. Working the nightshift as I write

We have about 8 people in our dept to cover all the shifts. 2 people per shift

I work the following :-

Mon-Thu Dayshift 12 hours
6 days off
Thu-Sun Nights 12 hours
4 days off
Fri-Sun Dayshift 12 hours
Mon-Wed Nights 12 hours
4 days off
Back to the start again

Having the week off in the middle is great, as well as the 4 days off too. I get to spend loads of time with my wife and kids which is great The only downside is that having half the month off at home, I can't surf to PistonHeads so often as I do at work

good luck.

I work continentals. 4 on 4 off. 7am-7pm first 2 then 7pm-7am. but no saturday nights(which is nice)

Have to say its anabolute nighmare trying to organsie it all. Getting people to do OT when ppl are on holliday or trianing causes all sorts of hastle.

The management keep coming up with new rules. This is my favourite one You cannot book a holiday unless you have got a member on another shift to agree to cover your days off

Oh how I laughed.

Also these shifts absolutely kill me. I need the 4 days off just to recover. I have stopped doing the over time now(when I can get out of it) working my days off will see me having a nervous breakdown I think.

Our control room has this pattern. It provides 24/7 cover for two sets of 5 people working approx 37.5 hrs per week. The two sets roster are staggered a couple of days to avoid having two fresh people taking over at the same time.

5 days 0600to 1400
2 days off
5 days 1400 to 2200
2 days off
5 days 2200 to 0600
6 days off (Including the day you finish nights at 0600)
Complete cycle is 25 days, and of course you have to allow some time for handover. 45 mins in our case, which is quite generous. Leave and illness is covered by two 'spare' people, although you can get away without any (or one)if rostered people are prepared to work overtime.

Paul.
