Don't get me wrong. Valentines can be a great idea. Especially when your not single but OMG!!! £20 for a rose!????

I really must start my own florist because at those prices, i'm gonna make a killing! I've bought roses before and they're usually about two to three quid each so where did the extra £17 come from all of a sudden?

So does this make me a scrooge when I phone about several florists before I found one for a "better" price (£7.95)?

So Florists are such a great money maker? Nope

Florists rely on these special occasions to make a profit. You could have bought last week etc and pay less. They charge what the market will pay.

Just like Sainsburys and every other shop relies on Christmas, Easter, Valentines, Mothers Day, Fathers Day (Americanised Commercialism that never existed before), and every other "special day", that we must acknowledge and go out and buy something expensive for people!

Its still extortion!!!!

(btw....even if you ordered 4 weeks ago, it's still £20 as your delivering on Valentines.)

Problem is, the person I sent it to was miles away....as in hundreds of miles away.

So Florists are not busy on V day? And they are swamped with orders.. If they wer charign 50p for a rose they would still be delivering at Chrimbo

I never said 50p per rose. I said 2 to 3 quid originally. Plus I can in some way justify a price hike but what I'm arguing about is £17! Charge maybe a tenner at most but not twenty!

(You don't happen to be a florist???)

Probably a bit late - but did anyone think 'silk'?

Can be very classy, lasts longer than most relationships (add a card with - like our love, this will never die or similar) and doesn't cost the earth if bought weeks before.

And stop whining - either you 'buy' into the occaision or you've got an understanding partner.

Sorry! It's just that time of the year again and funds are running dry....MOT, Service, Road Tax, monthly loan repayment, parental contributions and now valentines! All in a space of one week!!!

<sigh>

Plus its only a "potential" in the partner thing so no guarantees.....

My mums a florist, Valentines day and Mothers day are their 2 busiest periods of the year.
Rural florists don't have too many opportunities to make lots of money - people soon get annoyed if they charge wedding prices for funeral flowers.
It's not just the florists who are bumping up the prices, their suppliers are at it too, especially the higher quality long stem roses.

Not saying it's right but weddings and events like these keep them afloat. If you want extortion, try interflora. They do little more than contact local florists with your order & stick on a hefty premium.
Nothing a quick search on Yell for florists local to the delivery won't sort out.

Why is it extortion..?

A huge number of people want to purchase flowers on this date (and others like Mother's Day)… there are n number of flowers… therefore they decide to charge a higher rate. Makes business sense to me.

Are you seriously telling me that you wouldn't do the same if you were in their position…?

tell me about it. Interflora wanted not only £20 (ex.VAT), but then an additional £5.99 (ex.VAT) for postage!

That's a "bargain" £30.54 for one frikkin' rose!

(I like the silk idea though). Reusable! (For the next one along the line )

The romantic in me burns deep....

I'm sure that if I charged £10 (or even £8 which I ended up paying), and advertised that I was cheaper than any other florist around me, I would make more money and more business.

But at the end of the day, I think all these "special" days have become way too commercialised and as for mothers day, I tend to buy my mother a wee card (she's very happy with that), make her breakfast in bed, lunch (if I'm about), and dinner. I then do the house work, and anything else she usually does and just generally be very nice to my great wee mother! (Costs a couple of quid for the card and much more effective than flowers).

As with valentines, again, a card is needed. I've even made a letter instead and that worked brilliantly. (Hand write it....DON'T print it!) And then suprise her with a nice quiet meal, and then treat her to whatever she wants. (Flowers are not usually essential).

I've never had complaints and the outcome is always a very happy gf.

But then again, I guess this all depends on the girl....they're all very different....

Yes, but you only have a finite amount of space and number of roses... ergo, you charge what people will pay.
