Environmentally unsound in the extreme
Discussion
The other day I had a delivery of network switches, 8 big b'stards to be precise, ok so high cost item, lots of packaging etc etc but what gets me today is the accompanying documentation which arrived in ...
A plastic courier envelope, containing a jiffy bag, containing 8 card envelopes, each containing an identical End User Licensing Agreement,WTF! Not that these bits of precious paper actually do anything, there is no Product Key or any such useful info, it's just pointless! Just a generic piece of tat that when coupled with the energy taken to produce it, then transport it, is just a complete waste of time and energy. Goddammit! who dreams up this cr@p, what sort of moron sits there and thinks to themselves "ah! we'd better send this out" ??? Why not put it in the effing box with the hardware if you have to? It's not as though you're going to buy the hardware and not put their proprietary software on it is it?
I'm just gobsmacked by the complete lunacy of this situation! What do they want me to do with them? put them in the pile with the 6 card envelopes containg the 6 license agreements for the 6 cpus I got last month?
Am I the only one who thinks there is something deeply flawed about the behaviour of some companies nowadays?
Oh! And did I mention, this drivel has taken a transatlantic flight to get to my desk? Expletives fail me!

Our customers are insisting that we try for ISO 14000.
So we had an 'Audit' from a consultant, and it turns out there are all sorts of regulations on packaging, waste disposal, etc that are law that surprisingly our Directors have no idea about.
It seems also that one of the lower managers who has been organising waste for years at a cost to the company, has actually been making a fortune selling it to waste management firm, cause much of what we throw away has value. (Like iron swarf) He's left the company.
So we now are investing in returnable packaging jointly with customers, we are no longer pouring chemicals away down the drain. and hey we seem to be saving the environment as well as money.
Mind you, the heat/air con in the office could do with a service cause it's 24 C at present.
And I'm not sure the MD really wants to save the environment in his petrol X5 with 19 inch alloys.

My money's on double layer cardboard with a plastic bhoy on each corner of each switch, and a seperate compartment for the documentation
Quite ingenious really, a carboard box to protect the packaging at one end and a curiously designed bit of packaging that makes it a complete pig to get the documentation out before you remove the rest of the contents, now the bit I really like is the installation guide telling me I should flat pack everything the stuff came in just in case I need to send it back to them! Not satisfied with sending me irrelavant rubbish through the post they want to clutter the place up with old cardboard and 'flat packed' packaging, Health & Safety would have a field day, I'm already getting hassle about having too much flammable stuff in the machine room anyway.
I wonder if there is a degree course available for Packaging Specialists?
