Glue removed from Thai monk's eye
An elderly Thai monk who mistook a tube of superglue for eye drops can see again after doctors unglued one eye.
Phra Kru Prapatworakhun, 81, had been unable to see for nearly a week after applying the superglue, which he found in his temple's medicine cabinet.

Doctors used acetone solvent to remove the glue from one eye and said it was unharmed, the Nation newspaper reports.

An operation on the second eye, which is still tightly sealed, is scheduled for Thursday.

Phra Kru Prapatworakhun, the abbot of a temple in Muang Angthong district, north of Bangkok, said he had a severe itch in his eyes on 17 February.

"I squeezed several drops on the floor and saw a clear liquid, so I put four drops into each eye. In about a minute, my eyes felt cold and then sealed closed," the monk told the Nation.

Another monk suggested he use thinners to get rid of the glue. But that only caused a searing pain, he said.

I had superglue on my head recently - it quickly seals up a nasty cut.

This wouldn't be the first time someone has put superglue in their eye a tube of eye ointment is exactly the same size and shape as a superglue tube. And yes superglue is commonly used for wound closure.

Patient of mine who's a bit visually impaired had an amusing variation on this.

Mistook a tube of glue for the antifungal cream she was supposed to put under her cheesy breasts (sorry if you're eating a sandwich).

Ended up sticking her hand to her chest. How we laughed...what she was doing with a tube of glue in the bathroom...

Superglue was originally developed as a glue for sealing wounds in battlefield situations / M*A*S*H (no, not the TV show) during the Vietnam war.

It was then discovered that it also made a very good general-purpose adhesive which is what it is sold over the counter as.

The fact that it was originally developed to bond skin explains why it is so good at bonding skin.

One of its great uses over the years has been a battlefield replacement for stitches. Works a treat and naturally heals out of the way.....Used in the vietnam war and ever since. Not necessarily cleared as a medical aid at the time, but now available in A&E up and down the country and often see liberally used after a friday night.

Oh, and superglue is really good when turned into a gas and used to accentuate fingerprints for crime scene investigations.

I don't know why, but when I think of a Buddhist Monastry, the last thing I'd expect to see there is superglue. I wonder what they use it for?

Sounds trivial. I've heard of people who have had their eyes glued to the telly for hours.

That's funny. I could have sworn I posted almost exactly the same information almost 2 hours previous to this post.

He should sue the superglue manufacturer, as they probably didn't put a 'Not to be used as eyedrops' warning on the label
