One for the etiquette experts methinks...

Normally if I get invited for dinner, I'll take a bottle... (*) however, what do you take when the hosts are teetotal and on a diet (hence chocolate is out!).

Thoughts..?

(*) - on a minor tangent how much would you spend ona bottle..? If they're good mates do you go cheap or expensive... and what about new friends..?!?

Avoid any sort of drink, i.e. dont take a bottle of coke as this will highlight the fact that they are tea total and may cause them to feel uncomfortable.

I'd go with the flowers for the lady suggestion and a nice box of after dinner mints. NOT after eights or matchmakers.

A bottle of wine and one glass, for yourself.

swore I said she was on a diet, so chocolate related items were probably best avoided...

Just yourself and your guest.

And if you're a fussy eater, let the cook know in advance, it's awful when you spend hours cooking, only to find your guests don't eat what you've cooked.

Sorry - I realise that my suggestions are as useful as tits on a fish. I'll stop now.

When my friend was pregnant and not drinking, I was invited round for dinner and I bought some nice fruit flavoured fizzy water from M&S. She was well pleased. Not as good as wine tho.

That'll teach me not to read the thread properly.

Actually why are you going round there at all, they sound like a right boring bunch

Take nothing but your sparkling wit in that case...

Pretend you don't know they are teetotal. Then you get to take the wine home again

Definately flowers for the lady, I suggest lillies. Then perhaps a nice small and innoffensive paperback for the host, nicely wrapped. Perhaps a copy of "The bootleggers" by Kenneth Alsop.

I'd suggest something by Oz Clarke.

Why bother going?

Teetotal and on a diet. Not much fun. Wait till their off their diet and then go round.

IMHO.

Hmm, let me think.... no alcohol.....no chocs... ah, how about an after dinner spli... oh no, bet they don't do that either.

Errr, think it has to be the flowers. Or if they like coffee how about getting a really nice one fresh ground, sort of thing you should check on though beforehand.
