Just you, i happened to be watching bbc world 10 minutes ago, seems fine to me

My unit has the rare habit of reporting "no satellite signal is being received" which is probably a software fault as it can be fixed by power cycling the box.

Does anyone else get the problem of having the black lines at the top and bottom of something in widescreen, even when you're watching it on a widescreen tv?

Has the box been told its on a wide screen tv? (common problem with dvd players). Movies often use a more rectangular ratio than widescreen tv's (1:1.85 for cinema vs 14:9 for home widescreen), so you still have bars at the top and bottom unfortunately.

Could be the satellite signal bouncing off a nearby glass trinket

I'll put my money on the Sky unit being crap.

I thought the last solar 'peak' or whatever it's called was around year 2000? next one around 2011 sometime ?

Depends on the aspect ratio of the film, most are shot in 2.35:1 which on even on widescreen will give you the black bars. Fims at 1.85:1 will fill you'll whole screen.

Will say on the back of the DVD what ratio.
