Recommend me a late summer's break - nice driving roads too

Wife and I are planning a break for around September. I request help from fellow posters as to possible destinations with great scenery (rolling hills and mountain roads and the like), good weather and great driving roads.
As neither of us have been to southern Spain or Italy, we have settled on these two countries. Andalucia edges it at the moment because of its history but surely Italy can offer much too.
However, I drove around south east France last year (Carcassone out to Beziers and Millau) and loved that too and would not mind driving around France again.
Any suggestions on areas to focus on please?
