Have a bad back at the mo and my local GP has suggested an Osteopath/Chiropractor or Physio. Having booked with a local osteopath the price he's given appears quite steep. Not having any point of reference for this I don't know if I'm just being tight and he's giving a standard rate.

So PH folks - what are the going rates for a 45 minute 'session'?

Anything from £40 to £100 is reasonable imo. Depends where you are.

If he sorts you out, that'll be cheap!

Overheads for any private clinic, of any discipline, can be very high. He might be charging you £75 but I bet only £50 of that goes in his pocket (if that). It's a fair pay for a professional service really.

Interesting - thanks. He has converted his garage into the clinic, but I'll bet there's still standards that apply to his profession.

Mines £45 for the first session, £35 for each thereafter. Sessions are an hour IIRC.

My chiropractor is £35 or £38 I think for a treatment, although I think the first appointment may well have been double as all the history, etc has to be taken.

£75 is too strong if thats for a 30 min session.Chiropractors do whats known as "the million dollar roll"They roll you around get the click these are "sublixations"which may or may not exist in and out, 10 minutes £45 lighter.

Mind you paid to see a harley st ,hernia specialist ,wouldnt do anything without an mri scan (£650) 8
mins cost me £250 F##k me!!

If he manages the 'magic click' in the 45 mins then I guess it's £75 well spent. I honestly can't remember what it cost last time I went (8 years ago) as all the costs were passed straight to the insurance company.

Very outskirts of SW London and I've paid £45 per session in November last year.

Sorted the problem, good chap actually, he's also dealt with my mum since and has been good/honest with her.

He also knows where you can get an MRI scan for one hell of a lot less than £850.
Gav realise you meant £650.So did i ,a place in waterloo was £200+.Not that simple my guy liked you to use the London imaging centre in wimpole st. Not all imagers or the drs that look at them are the same.I didn't want a comeback ie problem with mri scan etc. He had me by the goolies physically and metaphorically.

I must have a bargain of an osteopath then as I paid £19 for my 30 minute sessions!

admittedly that is at the uni gym but he is a very good osteopath (and also a dentist so a useful person to talk to about looking after your back in my profession)

I spent upwards of £60 for 30 minutes - I would have spent anything given the pain I was in and the amazing recovery I had after seeing the Osteo. The physical manipulation type Osteo's used to fix my back for 6 - 12 months at a time, then I went to a cranium osteo - pretty girl who lightly touched the back of my head and "changed my energy" - whatever the hell that means, it fixed me for what is 3 years running now.

I've lost count of how much money I've spent on osteopaths over the years.

I have now been diagnosed with AS which has pretty much contadicted every (expensive) diagnosis that the osteopaths have come up with to prelongate their extortionate fees.

So the next time an osteopath says 'oh, thats tight, let me crack that back in' just remember the 'crack' might be a little more input to the arthritus into your spine.

£35 a session at the one I'm seeing in Newmarket at the moment. £75 seems extortionate.

I see a Chiro in Winchester an its £36 per session and the inital session is about £50 I think.

When I say session - its like 10 - 15 minutes. I usually go in and its all done very quick.

Its helped me a lot.

Have you considered the Alexander Technique?
For some people it works really well, although does depend what type of back problems you have. I had a very shagged back at one point and it worked for me. This was after the huge amounts of valium and not being able to move (at-all) stage.

It does sound a bit strange but is actually quite practical - http://www.stat.org.uk
It happens that my mother is an Alexander technique teacher in Bristol. I am sure she could put you in touch with someone near you if you wanted to give it a try.

Big Al.
