How do you do it?

Do you have to remove the current varnish?

Products?

Advice apreciated!

I would have thought light sanding to get the varnish off and then waxing?

I'd imagine your chosen varnish would have application instructions.

Wouldn't have thought it crucial to get back to bare timber (unless you specifically wanted to). A light rub with sandpaper should provide sufficient key for the new varnish.

Unfortunately you will need to use a proper floor sander to return it to bare timber. unless you know exactly the current finish on the wood as any subsequent finish may not adhere correctly to it, also the patches where it has gone through to wood will look different to the areas where there is still the old finish.

I'd only go for waxing if you've no pets, children or clumsy houseguests. Even when properly applied wax finishes require a lo more maintenance in my experience.
