Afternoon Chaps

Moved in to my rented place on saturday. I have 2 sets of keys.

1 set works although is a fker to get back out of the door. 1 set doesn't. (The yale lock). My key is freshly cut.

I rang the estate agent as I was told that I was not allowed to get keys cut. She told me that they would not pay as they has just paid for a set. Even though they do not work.

So I get another cut. This does not work.

Do I ask for a new lock to be fitted or am I supposed to get by with the 1 key.

There are two of us in and out at different times. I am new to this so unsure what to do.

Thanks

Freshly cut keys can be 'sticky' as the cut edges are too sharp. If the shape is correct, try using some wet/dry paper to smooth it off a bit, and maybe some oil.

sounds like old lock/new keys. take them back to where you had them cut and see what they can do.

I'm betting that the estate agent has made the copies from a key which was itself, a copy of the original. The landlord probably has the master key. In my experience, if you get a copy cut from anything other than the original, it won't work properly. So, you need to get copies cut from the originals...which probably entails the estate contacting the landlord.

True as each copy is made it will be slightly "off" from the origional.
OP if you want to get keys cut you don't need to tell anyone, will cost you a couple of quid at local cobbler.

I know, you're right, but I'm feeling really lackluster and couldn't be bothered to think of anything original. So i used a very tired expression to raise a smile but utterly failed. I expect someone will '+1' me in a minute or correct my spelling/grammar.

Agree, also try pulling the key in and out of the cylinder, so rubbing the edges down.

Also pull the key just slightly out of the cylinder and see if that turns the cylinder, otherwise go and buy a new cylinder from Wilkinsons, about £2.95 with 3 keys, then along with the cylinder to your local locksmiths, who will cut further keys and you can check those work before fitting.

If you were in Bristol, being a landlord myself, I have a key cutting machine together with key blanks, I would have cut the keys FOC for you.

You could also try scribbling all over the key with a pencil and shoving it in and out of the lock a few time. Sounds stupid, but the graphite works as a lubricant and often frees up the mechanism quite effectively.

And there was me trying to inject my comedic genius to further bolster your post... one or both of us has failed and should give up for the night! wobble

Actually, can I just apologise to the OP. We've added nothing useful to this thread, just kinda wondered off into a weird conversation.

Sorry...again.
