.....which are a bit like an inside-out star washer, and you push them onto the end of a rod and the arrangement of the sprung centre means that they'll push on but not off again (at least not without difficulty/brute force)?

Not the shakeproof - they're something which you would press onto the end of a rod to (semi) permanently retain something on the rod?
