Cicero said:
The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.

Cicero, 55 BC

Roman author, orator, & politician (106 BC - 43 BC)

This made me smile.

In an ironic, world weary, head shaking way.

Amazingly the Roman Empire lasted another 450 years before the barbarian hordes destroyed it.

Those who ignore the lessons of history may well find themselves reliving it.

ETA If he signed it 'Cicero, 55BC' then he was indeed highly perceptive!!

What do you expect?

We have seen the collapse of society and a complete escape from personal responsibility.

10% of the plebs could be culled each year, watch them get up and about and on with it then.

The Eastern Empire lasted till 1453

...and its arguable that the Western Empire based at Rome is still in existence, through the Roman Catholic Church.
