We and a lot of our friends use a popular butchers in the next village to ours, they seem like a nice bunch behind the counter and the quality is always great. A friend of ours went in as usual, same weekly chit chat with the staff etc etc and then came to pay. The bill was £30.33, 33p more than he had on him "oh sorry, I'm 33p short" he said and was expecting the butcher to just let him off or say to pay next time "what do you want to put back then!" he said Now my friend is in this butchers weekly and over the course of a year spends a few hunderd pounds, so he turns round and says "you can put it all back" and walked out.
You'd have thought in the current financial crisis you'd be bending over backwards to keep your customers happy!

Half a dozen of one and a dozen of a half of the other I'm afraid. And some small businesses wonder why people just give up and go to a supermarket.
I totally agree that no one expects any charity or any credit but 33p from a loyal regular customer?
Sometimes exceptions should be made, not if demanded but certainly the offer of just drop it in next time should have been made. Fair enough if they don't see him for months at a time or he was arsey though.

If there are other people in a shop like that then it is quite usual for another person to give a few pence to allow the transaction to take place.
I've given people the odd 10/20p before and had it done to me too (passing on a favour) - I suppose its the old small town helping mentality.
Seems a little silly to quibble over less than a squid.
