Cruise ship guest lecturers
Discussion
You know the thing that some of the posher cruise lines have; some old fossil talking about opera, spying, Princess Diana or town planning?
Has anobody done it or know someone who does it? I think they work through an agency but Google is not my friend on this one.
As I near my retirement years I fancy a bit of freebie/reduced price crusiing in exchange for a few hour long lectures to old people.
I have a bizarre speciaist subject, I just don't know how to get on the cruise circuit.

Ooh, I fancy some of this too. I can see myself catering to the geeky academic cruise market.

Most Guest lecturers do not get paid, they usually get their cruise and air for nothing, often there partner/ spouse has to pay their own air and taxes. Depends on the cruise line. have a look at www.cruise-community.com for links.

I have found a contact at 'the' cruise company referred to.
My subject may not to to the tatate of their clientelle and will just bring derision if I mention it on PH as it is tantamount to Yoghurt kniting to the PH massive.
You will need 3 or 4 good 1 hour lectures and a couple in reserve. My subject may not to to the tatate of their clientelle and will just bring derision if I mention it on PH as it is tantamount to Yoghurt kniting to the PH massive.
I used to work with a guy who did stand up comedy at night - he's been on the radio a couple of times, and is on the cocmedy circuit often, so I guess he's quite good.
Anyway, he got a guest spot on a cruise, he was booked for a week, in which he was supposed to do 2 or 3 "spots". On the first one he made a joke about the Queen Mum, was basically frozen off the stage and spent the rest of the week hiding from the blue rinsers.
Still, he got a free holiday for a week, including his family, so not all bad.

I have found;
The lecturers just get free cruises and flights for you +1. You get a guests cabin, not crew quarters but it is sometimes a cheap cabin inside the ship. They also give you a generous 'guests' discount if you want to take family. Only the big 'names' get paid on top.
They expect 3 or 4 x 40 minute slots a week when you are at sea so the key is to get on longer cruses with just a few sea days (!)
You have to be 'expert' as the audience are often pretty knowledgeable.

Even if it opens you up to derision you'll have to tell us your topic!

I think you'll be surprised actually that people here are impressed by all kinds of things. If you told us you were great at flower arranging, I think you'd find a lot of people would be interested.
Go on, tell us. I really want to know now.

Oddly,
prejudice; what it is, what it isn't, how it develops and how it manifests, how to measure it, how and when it leads to discrimination, how our brains are wired for it, what makes it worse and my latest trick; how to reduce it.

Are you sure that is interesting/"sexy" enough for a guest lecture?prejudice; what it is, what it isn't, how it develops and how it manifests, how to measure it, how and when it leads to discrimination, how our brains are wired for it, what makes it worse and my latest trick; how to reduce it.

We went on a RC cruise last year - on that frigging big Independence of the Seas thing. Loads of fun - no old fossils, they tend to go Cunard/P & O. Lectures on the I of S ranged from our port destinations to art history. Bizarrely RC seemed to have a love affair with the Titanic as well. Books in the library "1001 greatest shipwrecks" to having your photo taken in front of a picture of the Titanic’s staircase.
I took the QM2 last year from New York to Southampton. The two guest speakers were Helen Lederer (yawn) and an American political analyst - much more my glass of Bollinger. Probably attended by a couple of hundred passengers, who were well informed and principally British and American. The American had written a book and it could be bought on board, so I guess they were the extra bunce for him.
