Tried finding some information on the net, but just want to make sure what we need to do before we go re jabs and tabs.

So, does anyone know what jabs we may need, or tablets we'll need to take whilst there?

I don't think that you need to take any malaria pills or anything over there. Jabs wise, I would get your Tetnus (sp), and Hepititis jabs. When I went to Cuba that was pretty much all I had.
Have an awesome trip!

I didn't have any jabs before I went to the Dominican Republic. I would still drink bottled water and avoid the ice cubes when you're out there though.

Nor me and yes avoid salads as well

Unless you are in a 5* hotel, they use bottled for everything IIRC

Beware tropical 'storms' - we caught the last one of the season - a bit of Jurassic Park was filmed there (where he is trying to escape with the test tubes) - they didn't need 'fake' rain wink Tis fine 2 mins later tho biggrin

Shouldn't have any problems, it's pretty safe.

You probably ought to learn a few useful phases e.g.

"Yo pag-oh pa-ra tod-os" means "Please bring me the bill"

"Don-day es-tan las chee-cas cally-entes" means "How do you do?"

Etc.

Honeymooned in the Dominican Republic 12 years ago. Had hepatitis, tetanus booster, and typhoid jags. Also had polio drops. No malaria required. Ask your GP for their advice.

Used to go to DR fairly frequently with no jabs whatsoever, don't worry. There's probably more exotic diseases in parts of East Anglia than you will find there.

You need antimalarials.
Chloraquine and proguanil is ok but I would go for Malarone as you only need start 2 days prior to travel and for 7 days afterwards rather than 7 and 28 for chloroquine and proguanil.

Routine immunisations as per UK scheme with boosters and HepA if you have not had it. Would not bother with HepB or Rabies.

I've been out to the Caribbean several times now, and I just make sure my tetanus is up to date and that is all.

just be sensible with salads and ice cubes etc and only use bottled water (with a sealed top). Just take plenty of things for insect bites and upset tummies (and sore heads after too much rum)

If you change money on the street watch out for this scam which happened to us in Colombo.

He'll count the local money with the large denomination notes on the bottom topped up with loads of very small notes.

He'll hand it to you to check and you'll discover it's a little short.

He'll look puzzled, take the notes back and recount them.

When he discovers you were right he'll be hugely apologetic and make up the difference.
At this point he'll spot some Tourist Police and suggest you should part company as it's illegal to change money unofficially.

You'll stuff your money into your pocket and saunter off. He'll disappear sharpish.

Later you'll check your money and find that when he took the notes back for the recount he slipped the big notes off the bottom and trousered them.

They're that good at it, it's very nearly worth it.

That it is on the island of Hispaniola.

That the original Buccaneers came from there.

That the ship in 'Treasure Island' was called Hispaniola.

That its neighbour Haiti was the first Black colony in the world to gain its independence.

That an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana is not really DR.

That the oldest church in the New World is in DR.

That Columbus' house is there too.

That they have ninety-four ways of cooking bananas.

Salmonella, Botulism, car-jacking, muggings at gunpoint.
Excellent, no-holds-barred prostitutes however.
Oh, STD's - but that goes without saying.
