A little clarification would be more helpful.

It's the accepted greeting isn't it? Especially when being introduced for the first time.

If not a handshake, what?

I find a cheeky squeeze of her left boob is also great ice breaker, if you feel uncomfortable shaking hands.

Common sense courtesy says that a man should shake a womon's hand but in a more genteel manner than that of a man.

There is some sub conscious differentiation applied to whether it is a social or professional scenario. In a job meeting, the woman is treated the same as a man, just a hand shake, but socially it different.

I am advised that a handshake with a Muslim woman is not the done thing.

You have to be careful here, I found myself doing the same situp exercise as a fit young lady on the mats at the gym the other week, commented on it and we got talking. And we shook hands when introduced ourselves. So I would say its good if you're talking to random people.

(I should also add I'm never starting random conversation like that ever again, as a few minutes later she confessed she'd joined the gym and was getting fit so that she could join the army "once I've finished school"... Oops.)

What's your point? A handshake with a Western male is the done thing.

I prefer a high-5 in that situation!

As above I'd say a professionally yes (work not sex now).
