Dog Walkers - Keep your muts on their leads!

You shouldn't be owning a dog, as you don't understand the dynamics of dog owning. the situation you have described is entirely of your own making. get some dog training, or stop dog owning.
I've had dogs for most of my life and, up until recently, there always seemed to be an unwritten rule that if you saw another dog on the lead, it was on the lead for a reason and I therefore would put mine back on the lead.
But these days, and I'm talking the last year maybe, this seems to have gone completely out the window. Other owners who seem completely oblivious to their animals aggresive behaviour and just letting them free to terrorise other more friendly animals.
I hate to generalise, but it does seem to be the Staffie and Rottie brigade who are the main culprits, in my experience anyway. I will add that these are wonderful breeds and great dogs, but they do seem to attract a minority social underclass of owner who don't really give a monkeys about anyone else.

He keeps his dog leashed, other dogs dogs attack it and it's HIS fault? How do you figure that one out?

I agree, my dog is let off most of the time but as soon as I see another dog which the owner has on a lead I put my dogs on too, it is a matter of respect and generally, if the owner has it on a lead it is for a reason. It is only fair IMOph1l5 said:
I don't mind it so much. I keep my dog on a lead and others come over to her, then they get savaged. I steer well clear of other dog walkers when I am out, but it cant be helped if they come over. 98% of the time its just rough and tumble and looks a lot worse than it is.
this is a good point- my dog whilst very well trained and socialised hasn't learnt the complete "leave me alone" signals yet so tends to bother other dogs when they don't want the interest. I'm happy for the other dog to give mine a nip or two to teach him- its his own fault!Ahhh Moneypenny said:

I agree, my dog is let off most of the time but as soon as I see another dog which the owner has on a lead I put my dogs on too, it is a matter of respect and generally, if the owner has it on a lead it is for a reason. It is only fair IMOI keep my dog off her lead as much as possible so she can have some fun. I tend to walk where there aren't that many dogs, but I have to say that there are some aggressive dogs around. What is happening though? Is it a real attack or is it a lack of communication between the dogs. Dogs will sort themselves out and maybe a little snapping and barking is necessary to resolve this communications.
There are some dogs that are needlessly aggressive (almost always because of their owners) and there isnt much you can do about this. But equally I have seen owners panic at the approach of a dog. One I saw even dangled his small terrier by a lead to get it away from some other dogs! Talk about over-reaction and utterly unnecessary, but then the dogs pick up on this and it does no good at all.
What is happening? My mutt gets on with just about every dog and I dont have a problem. She just wants to play though.

My Dog's always off the lead until I see another dog on a lead, then he is as well. If the other dog is also off the lead then let then play/sniff/bum
I think its down to the type of dog, The only way my dog would hurt something is if it drowned it in drool.
Saying that I only take her off the lead in areas where its kind of an unwritten rule big fenced in area, always loads of dogs up there all off the lead causing mischief. Walking her down the park she will go back on the lead, or I will keep her sat next to me holding her collar, around small children and dogs on leads.

It is only fair IMOYour reaction to other dogs with yours on a lead is provoking them to attack your dog.
If you leave him off, and let him do his doggy "thing" then you'll have very very few problems. Certinaly less that you are having now.
If you keep him on a lead becuase he doesn't have perfect recall then i will refer you back to my first post.
