I took one on a driving tour of London last night to show him the sites.

Why do they talk so damned loud? 3 hours in a car with an American person booming in my ear reduced me to near tears frown

Because they associate volume with quality.

Equally, I am sure there are 1001 stories from the US about someone taking a Brit around and wondering why we talk so loud, shout at people to be understood and have a silly accent.

And we wonder why Americans have a stereotypical image of a Brit who has an superiority complex.

Yes, but at least our superiority complex is well justified....

Where I live I would estimate it to be about one in ten that are loud.
As you move up and down the economic ladder I guess the ratio changes.
They can be irritating here too, a talk show host in Florida once singled out a particular group and nearly lost his jobbiggrin

When I lived there I found telling the odd loud one I was not deaf and could they reduce the volume a little worked perfectly well. You should've tried it.

Because the Americans associate with being loud / the biggest as being the best...

Indeed. As opposed to the ignorance of other nationalities who believe themselves to be superior.
