Try the Scotsman and drop down to the Bridge North Brasserie for a meal or just for drinks. I enjoyed it and the service was great, albeit the layout is a little wierd.

Only going to be eating one meal in the hotel restaurant - breakfast - so want it to be a good one - not some "kept hot" buffet - or dried out hot plate fayre - cooked to order full English (Scottish!)

Prestonfield House is good albeit a taxi ride from centre.

Scotsman is quirky for sure.

Castle view rooms in Balmoral can be pretty special although you do risk the old hotel room lottery.

Balmoral breakfast is damn fine.

I haven't really been lurking for 40 months. Don't know whats happened there................

I've heard good things about the Glasshouse. But then I live here, so hotels aren't really that important to me biggrin

The Witchery, just awesome. First time I stayed there, same suite, right after one of the Minogue sisters and a certain racing driver checked out.

Restaurant is really good as well, with a great wine list.

Prestonfield & Witchery are both top choices for a one-nighter and W's wine list is great if somewhat overpriced, but they think the restaurant's better than it actually is imho.

A friend of mine used to work at The Witchery and called me up one evening (back in 1999!) and said: "you'll never guess who's just ordered a £2000 bottle of wine... only David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve!" The drivers were accompanied by their respective partners Heidi Wichlinski and Dannii Minogue.

My best mates have stayed there twice, as they enjoyed it so much. Once as a treat, and then the night they got engaged (surprise for her, and lots of planning by him biggrin )

It's a pity the outside looks so horrid. But from what I have seen on the website, the inside is fab.

Spent my wedding night in the Scotsman, so have a wee soft spot for it. Lovely hotel.

If you are prepared to do a taxi ride (10 mins) Preston field house is amazing!

In town I'd go for the Glasshouse, although it can be a touch noisy if you get a room at the front

I'll sit on the fence regarding the restaurant. I think for the price it's very good. It's not that expensive, and it's certainly one of the best in the area. Convienience of being located in the hotel swings it for me to eat there when I stay there.

It's certainly not Claridges quality though. Happy to say the best meal I've ever eaten was at Ramsay's place there. Just awesome, and well worth the money. When I get back inot the UK soon I'll be taking the wife there again smile

As an Edinburgher I don't have much call to stay at these places, but the Caledonian and the Balmoral are reputed to be the best in the traditional sense.

I have had breakfast at the Balmoral, courtesy of a journalist from a Sunday newspaper (long story), the only complaint was we had to tell the waitress to move on as she was earwigging our 'chat'.

The Balmoral probably would win out for me. Good luck with parking/access whatever you do wink
