Ok well my dearly beloved was just about to vacuum the staircase. Our Dyson Animal has just turned 5 years old and when he powered it up, it didn't sound right. On closer inspection it appears to have a problem that it has a problem with the motor (it eventually overheated and automatically cut off).

So I suspect that it will be time for a new vacuum. A new Animal is £300, but for the same amount of pennies we can get the new Miele upright S7 Cat & Dog.

Does anyone have one or any of the other S7 models and if you do, what do you think to it.

Can't speak for the S7 specifically but I used to have a Cat & Dog cylinder and I'd give it the edge over the Dyson I have now.

Had a Miele s300 for 8 years, no issues ... My mums had hers for about 15 years (I think), no issues.

Get one ...

I had a look online last night and most places were charging £290 for the DC14 Animal.

The thing is I have had 2 Dyson's so far and i've been dissapointed in both their lifespans. It seams i'm not alone as a lot of articles I have read online seam to suggest that a lot of others have problems.

Also this latest one already had the flexible tube replaced and one of of the accessories replaced about 2 years ago as they had split.

So i'm thinking of giving them a miss this time We bought a Miele Washer/Dryer last year and have been very impressed with it so far, so last night I had a look at their vacuum cleaner range.

You could also consider a George/Henry, extremely simple and robust machines, why do you think hotels/schools use them?

We have a Miele Cat & Dog. It is a good hoover (so I'm told). Our next door neghbour borrowed it as their Dyson needed some repair work. By the end of the day, their Dyson was in the bin & they were admiring their new new Miele after a quick trip to the local electical place.

They are pretty good.

I am not anal enough to know the name of my hoover, nor am I likely to give it a pet name either.

But it is yellow..

I think.

We've got the cylinder version and, whilst I've never used it myself, the OH seems to like it. Filters are quite expensive.

We have a Henry for the upper floors of Cheeky Towers - whilst suction is good, the filter is a bit rubbish and I don't think you are meant to wash them. It now fills the house with a dreadful musty stink if we use it.

We have a Dyson Animal as well - much better.

Nice to see a female PH asking a Hoover question! wink

Ah yes, I was asking the question, but the other half was the one doing the hoovering at the time of said malfunction.

Same here - I've had 2 Dysons, but broke within a couple of years. Purchased a Miele Silverstar 4.5 years ago, won't ever buy anything else now.

Sebo are good as well.

But it says something for the Hoover Company that all vacuum cleaners are called 'Hoovers' regardless of who makes them smile

Not specific to Cat&Dog hoovers but our cleaner (of 9 years) doesn't rate Dysons, but she does rate Mieles.

Not sure about the Miele S7, but I heard the Saleen S7 isn't bad.

From Which? magazine.

Miele's first foray into the upright vacuum cleaner market is a real winner. The S 7210 is Miele's entry-level model in the S7 range and performance is outstanding.

At 9.8kg this is a relatively hefty cleaner, and it might feel a little heavy during use, but thanks to the swivel neck it's very manoeuvrable and you can lay it flat to the floor to vacuum under low furniture.

Dust pick-up from carpet, laminate and floor boards is outstanding. The S 7210 is the entry-level model, and is supplied with the basic Super AirClean filter, but we found filtration to be excellent - good news for allergy sufferers. If you want to upgrade your filter later you can use other Miele filters in this vac.

This is a bagged vac, so you will need to buy replacement bags. However, in our carpet tests the suction stayed strong as the bag filled, so you shouldn't have to change it too frequently.

With a reach of more than 11 metres, you can cover a lot of floor space before unplugging - good for vacuuming large rooms. It has is a height-adjustable hose for curtains and stairs. Attachments, including soft brush, stair and gap nozzles, fit neatly to the body of the machine for storage.

It's quick to pick up pet hair, but you will need to clean the brush afterwards. There's a dial on the front of the cleaner to adjust the suction to suit the surface you're vacuuming, and the switch on the handle adjusts the level of the brush so you can easily switch between carpet and hard floors.

Energy consumption is fairly low, and noise levels are average, too.

Pros: Excellent on carpet, laminate and floor boards, good filtration, easy to clean under furniture

Cons: A little heavy

Thanks Ant for that.

I think the one we are looking at is the next one up, which is the S2760 - I guess it is pretty much the same unit with a few extras.
