Just about at the end of my current contract and facing the prospect of going back to working away from home again, at least for 6 months. I've been contacted about a job in Epsom, which sounds good to me (financially anyway), but what about living costs etc - places to avoid, places to seek, outlying villages etc. Any help would be appreciated, bearing in mind I'm in the North East it's not somewhere I could just pop out and have a look around...

Towards the college area & the southern part of Epsom is (in my opinion) the nicer part of town.

I'd try to avoid being too close to the longmead estate (it's not exaclty "rough" but there's quite annoying few little chav's running about).

Failing that, some of the smaller villages just outside are very nice as well

Lots of empty new build flats in the centre of town, however parking may be a problem at some of them.

I'm local, so PM me if you want the inside track on anywhere.

So funny, but so true.

Epsom got voted best place to live in in the UK a few years ago by some Channel 4 programme.

While I think that's stretching it a fair bit, I do think it's a decent place on the whole.

The Longmead area's probably the less nice area but compared to estates in the surrounding area (Sutton, Chessington, Kingston) it's really not that bad at all.

I guess the main limiting factor is how much you want to spend on accommodation. It ranges from middling to pricey to how much???!!!!

I used to live in Ashtead, a couple of miles from Epsom towards the M25. Nice place place to live, I thought. I paid £650 for my open-plan 1 bed flat which included all bills too - bargain. When I left, about 18 months ago, the rent was put up to £675. Expect to pay somewhere around that (probably more), but excluding bills!

My letting was through Jackie Quinn.

At the moment it's a choice between B&Bing it 4 nights a week, or paying £600 - £700 a month to rent a place.

West side (towards the Green) is pleasant and an easy to walk to the station.

£700 - forget it - might as well get one of those town centre apartments & secure parking.

Obviously I'd rather pay less than that smile

How about this:

I lived here for a while and it's a lovely spot, 10-15 mins walk from the town centre. Furnished too.
