I think I know the answer to my own question, here, but it's not what I want it to be, so I thought I'd bounce it off the forum!

My engine was running hot it traffic at the weekend, and the fan wasn't cutting in. I've just checked the fuse and relay, then tried bridging the two relay terminals with a piece of wire - nice blue spark and a sad click from under the radiator, but no rotation from the fan!

Question is, is there any way to access the fan without removing the front clamshell, draining the cooling system and removing the radiator?

Mine stopped working about six months from new, whether this is a common problem I'm not sure but it was sorted under warranty. It did get hot though flashing reading.....

sorry, it's a clam off job.

having said that, it's not that bad a job to remove the front clam.

they do seem to suffer sezing up, I suspect though lack of use and the attitude that they are mounted at.

Thanks Scuffam,

I came to the same conclusion myself last night, so I bit the bullet and took the clam off.

As you say, it would be a straightforward job, if it weren't for the fact that all the fixings were rusted solid and the rivnuts just rotate - took me most of the evening and the usual grazed knuckles! Old fan was seized solid, which I guess is not surprising given that any rain will run straight down through the radiator onto it. Still got it off, so I'm just waiting for Eliseparts to send me a new fan, now.

Trouble is, I'm off touring the Scottish Highlands this weekend, and it's beginning to look as though I'll have to take the tin box instead!
