engine options
Discussion
hello i'm a new member, basically i'm looking for knoledge. i love the elise i think its gorgous,
how ever i've heard things about the engine not being all that, i have heard you can swap for 2ltr V-tecs out of honda civic type R for example and you can swap for audi tt engine..
i was wondering can u put a cosworth ybt 2ltr engine in it. i realise that it would need some bodging (modifying) for the intercooler and so forth but would the lump fit??
if anyone could answer i would much apreciate it, i look forward to anyones reply.

thank you, for your input much apreciated.
don't you think an elise with a 400bhp cosworth engine be intresting.... i think i might try it when i get enough money of corse. although aren't te audi turbo engines 5 pots so wouldn't they be slighty longer than a 4... anyway thank you and we shall see whether it can become possible...
thanks again

maybe its something worth doing then?? first for everything and all that..
well it would certainly be intresting because you can make a escort cosworth do 0-60 in just under four seconds and that weighs so much more than an elise...
who knows........... when i get enough money i will certainly give it a go..

Im not sure the cossie is the way to go. The engine with all ancillaries is very heavy, quite tall and produces a lot of heat, you would probably have to do a lot of work to restore the balance of the car.
Also, I imagine, you would have to find a fwd gearbox that could mate to the engine and was capable of coping with the torque that they produce when they are tuned. I put this engine in my Stylus but was able to keep the T5 box.
Because, soon, I may be looking for a slightly more practical nutter machine I am keeping a close eye on the Elise scene. IMO the audi unit has the most promise to produce a 350 bhp monster. The cossie gets expensive and, more importantly, much less reliable when tuned to over 350 anyway.
The weight of the cossie however was why I have now discounted it as a potential unit for an Elise.
Hope this helps and hope I have not put a damper on things..you pays yer money....

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Holeshot Racing were working on a conversion based around a turbo-ed Suzuki Hayabusa bike engine. I don't know what came of it in the end, but the power-to-weight of that engine would be something to behold

thanks a lot everyone, looks like the audi lump will do.. i just had an image of a little elise with 410bhp dumping 4ft flames out the exhaust.. my friend had a 410bhp cossie and it wasn't that reliable.. so it maybe best to just try for the audi.. thanks for your help everyone... i'm off to find out how much power you can squeeze from the audi engine and whether you can put a garret T4 hybred turbo on it.. thank you all you have been a great help
thanks again... :-)
thanks again... :-)
