Afternoon folks,

This is posted on behalf of a mate.
Anyone assist?

Many thanks....

Jas

The digital temperature on the dash on a good run sits at about 79 deg C, peaking very rarely at 82 deg C. There are 2 temp senors on the engine, one sends a signal to the ECU to control the cooling fans, mixture etc and the other is just for the dash read out.

From everything I've read, I should be seeing a normal operating temperature of around 90 deg C so it would suggest the thermostat is letting by or possibly the dash sender is buggered. No reason to suspect the sender so its more likely to be the stat. Can anyone steer me on which its likely to be?

I don't know if this is in anyway related to the above but after a few days into a recent trip down to Cornwall, even though the dash temp was telling me 79, the ECU told the cooling fans to run all the time. I'm suspecting this is because the ECU doesn't expect to see a low running temperature for such a long time and goes to a default safety loop and runs the fans in a "just in case" mode. The fan running all the time was becoming a pain so I called into South West Lotus for some on the spot assistance (thanks guys). It got sorted but only really after some rather inconclusive and frustrating "well its not doing it now" type responses and strangely it hasn't done it since. However if the two issues are related I'm expecting the same thing to eventually happen again if not properly sorted.

A while back I had a similar problem with Temp, no Fan issue though. During Motorway travel of 80 miles the temp was running between 69 and 80 for a period of three months.

Steve Williams checked the thermostat, which seemed to open and close never the less Steve fitted a new one just in case.

This sent the temp back to 84 to 94 and has been the same since. I see you are in Hampshire, Steve Williams is in Maidenhead tel: 01628 770066 he may be able to help.

I have also seen somewhere a mod that places the thermostat at the front to reduce the volume of cooler water in the system.

This is a theory around Elise CHG failure with respect to cold water in Rad and Hoses during the colder months.

i.e. When the Car is left out all night in the cold the water in the rad and the hoses feeding the rad are very cold. On starting your journey the engine gets to normal operating temp. The driver believing the car is now ready for action starts to drive the car for what it is designed for. As the engine temp rises the Thermostat opens with a large volume of freezing water hitting the engine. The theory is that the temperature difference possibly causes the engine damage resulting in CHG failures associated with Elise and MGF.

Don’t you love cooling systems?

Good luck

Regards Gary
