What would you do?

Mint 1999V S1 111S with 2.5k miles, 12months Tax/MOT, 1yr comprehensive no-quibble warranty, Full C-service with Cambelts

or...

For the same money... 2001 S2 Sports Tourer.. +/-18k, 6 months tax & MOT and no warranty.

What is your budget exactly? I'm selling my 2002 S2 sports tourer, I need the money to move out of my parents and I'm getting more and more desperate to go as the days go by!

Edited to say: sorry I'm not much help with your decision!

I guess it depends on exactly what your going to be using it for, how many miles you do, which you prefer the look of, etc.

Sure everyone else will reply and help you make a better decision!

But I'll sell you mine for 17k!

Thats a shed load of cash for a S1 111s however good...

And I have one....

I'd pay 14k for a very good private one and have 3k for insurance, training, upgrades etc...

the reality is that the deal i've negotiated buys me the car at approx £15,200.

this price includes the following:-

full c-service carried out by a Lotus main dealer
cambelt change
disc-brake skimming
1yrs rfl
12months mot
private-plate transfer
fitting of a s/s exhaust, hurricane & 160tb (supplied at my cost)
1yrs comprehensive warranty with unlimited claims and a £5k limit per claim.

now I think that is rather cheap! (especially as the car has only 2.5k on the clock)

Is it a private sale? If so ask how much for the car only and do the rest yourself.

A C service including belts can be had for less than £300 by a specialist in Arundel (where in Hants are you??) and they can do the zorst etc. can be done while it's up on the ramp for a couple more hours labour (£35 per hour) and they will MOT it for you for and extra 40 quid so that's around £400

Tax is £165 for the year and the private plate transfer can't be that much hassle either.

Why do the discs need skimming after 2.5k?

If you want a warranty then you can get your own from the AA but unless your unlucky you won't need it if you get an inspection done.

£15200 isn't bad but I'd guess you could get the car for £13500-£14000 if it's mint so you'd have enough left of your £15200 to insure it if you did the above.

With those bits and the warranty it sounds like a good deal and gives you piece of mind....

Buy it....

Can't see the point in buying a 2.5k Elise - none of the 'issues' will have been sorted so you will have the hassle of doing them. Also, you are paying a premium for a super low mileage car - as soon as you put any miles on it, it will become any other Elise and your premium paid made worthless.

I disagree. I bought a 4k S plate Elise 18 months ago and it's fine. It might be worth checking all the recalls have been carried out - a call to the factory with the VIN number will verify that.

What 'issues' are we talking about here?

I still think £15200 is a lot but what price piece of mind?

Just a thought, but a car that has only done 2500 miles has clearly spent a *lot* of time sitting there doing nothing.. now I am no mechanic, but that can not be a good thing for it?

The warranty sounds good, but for a little less money there is a 2000 S160 that went into the classified adds yesterday... alright it has done a few more miles than this one but still very low milage in the grander scheme of things? The S160 is in comparison (both to the 111s and the S2 you were thinking of) a rather special car and surely has to be a more sensible purchase ?

I looked very closely at the S160 but don't want to buy into the whole VHPD (same reason why I also passed the Exige by even though it fell into my budget).

The car will be my everyday driver (before you say anything, I ran my previous elise as an everyday car right through the winter so know what to expect) and I can't be arsed with lumpy and irregular idle (unless of course it's been sorted with verniers etc) and 6k service intervals.

The insurance on a S160 is also massive whereas I've managed to get a £750 quote for 14months (long story) comprehensive protected cover with a 15k mileage restriction and cover for all the mods I'm making.

As for things not being sorted... The Ferrari dealer has instructions from me to check with the factory that the recalls have been done (red hose, electromagnetic interference, floor corrosion etc etc) and their warranty will cover anything and everything that might go wrong over the next 12 months.

By the time you add up the value of all the extra bits and bobs I'm getting, subtract that from the £15,200, the car is no more expensive that a privately bought car without any of the piece-of-mind.

Not from what I've heard. They're a right royal pain in the arse to get running smoothly and a bastard at MOT time apparently - almost impossible to get through the emissions test.

I've been told by a very respected Lotus mechanic to steer well clear.

Have to side with ayjay and say that hes done the right thing.

Yes. its ultra low mileage and been sitting around but a warranty and check for recalls should settle that. no worries.

It is a premium price but im guessing its a1 and there are not a lot of S1 111s out there in this nick (trust me !!!!)

and if you know your elises then the majority of potential owners acknowledge this model as the 'one to go for'. a year on and a 10/12k 111s will fetch top dollar as there will be very few around.

True that when you put the miles on it would be like any other elise but you buy it with 2 and but 10 on then its 12k miles. you buy it with 22k miles and put 10 on then its 32k !

If your like me...you will use that MILEAGE limit field on autotrader ! as we all know how sensitive they are to price ! folk will pay the premium for low miles im afraid.

That pretty much sums it up really,,, but probably the biggest reason is who i am buying it from.

I've worked in the car-sales industry before moving to the yachting industry and i'm dealt with scores of dealerships... these guys have consistantly looked after me and always dealt generously and efficiently with my extremely anal attention to detail (after all, how many dealers would systematically work through a 2 page e-mail of queries and requests for a simple car sale!).

Piece of mind is a big big thing. I play the lottery because I can afford £1 per week, but playing the lottery on used car purchases, is a gamble too far for me!

fair point but id be looking at it totally different.

get it checked. Look at the service. Cool.

Whats the worst that can happen with the elise. Its not a temperemental Italian V6. Its a Rover with a lego work suspension.

Always bought private.. never fussed about reliability as owners accounts don't require it.

each to their own tho and u have peace of mind. Once you've trawled the BBS's for so long tho then this goes right out of the window !

yup they have been dealing in maserati since day one but are also a main dealer for ferrari.

i can't comment on how their service compares with other ferrari dealers but their attitude is that if they sell it on their forecourt, they give the same level of service, ergo, i get the same level of service as someone buying a £160k 575M.

put it this way,,, this is the third out of three cars i've bought recently that i have bought from them.

...and there is always a deal to be done... keep an eye on their website and you never know what might spring up!
