Hiya you lucky Lotus people!
I am coming over to you from the Cerbera Forum. No this may seem a little odd to you but I am thinking of moving from a Cerbera to an Elise, standard 1.8 S1 maybe a 111S but not sure yet. I am going for the lower end of the market, maybe £12k or so.I would use it as my everyday car travelling about 75miles a day from Leigh on Sea to Stansted Airport using some great ‘A’ roads.
So why the move? I find the Cerbera is too much of a supercar on our roads and you can never drive anywhere near the limit of the car, usually only 60% of the cars potential.
So has anyone else ever made the switch? Can I use the car everyday? The Girlie does have a V70 Volvo and a Z4 so maybe I don’t ‘have’ to use it everyday but I have a feeling I would!!!!!!
Thanks
Nick

Guys,
Just do it, I have just gone for an S1 for everyday use, it is great. I agree with you about the TVR, I thought about lot's of other cars and the fear of driving 'too' fast and attracting the BIB. I am so pleased with the Elise I found, it is great fun and although more than capable of breaking the law you feel you are able to use 95% of it's ability on the road for fun.
I ended up finding a 1 owner Azure Blue car on a 1999 S plate with rain cape, sports exhaust and FLSH for under £9k. The only thig to be done is to fit a new set of tyres (rears desperate, fronts are just old). I have treated the car to a full set of Yoko AVS for under £300, so all in she owes me £9k.
Just go for it guys, you won't regret it.

The 9K one sounds great!
I don’t mind a little mechanical work, I am not a stranger to it!
As for the speed here is a little clip of my current ride!
Here is the MPEG. Had some issues getting it onto my PC. Called my PC geek mate who is hosting it for me.
http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/Hartrup/TVR.mpg
right click and 'save as' 3.08MB
no animals were harmed during the making of this movie. All speeds are well within the NSL and if it looks quicker its a camera trick. The volume of the exhaust is well within legal limits and any volume over this limit was acheived with mirrors.

Make sure you take into account the running costs; that is quite a high mileage if you are paying for it yourself. I take it you didn't do that daily trip in the Cerb!!!!
You'll get really pissed off with the straight line performance of the std S1 after a cerby.
Plenty of modded S1s out there so get one of those for same money. reason being that a lot of new owners cant afford the insurance. 160+bhp should do you. a PTP or DVA kitted car will be your best best IMHO

I don’t think an Elise is about how fast it goes, its more about the perfect chassis, for me. I cant think of the last time I went over 100mph in the Cerbera, its torque is good for over-taking but even then you have to be Very Very careful not to light up the rears.
Reasons why I am attracted to an Elise; (in no particular order)
Legendary chassis and road holding
It’s a Lotus
Great performance in both MPH and MPG
Reasonable servicing costs (Cerbera can cost £1400 for a new clutch)
It has ‘Tinker-ability’ so I can dust off my tools!
So really I am looking at a great sports car that I can drive every day, excellent feedback through the wheel and your bum.
The Cerbera is really like driving a 1995 F1 car through the middle of town!

understood. cheap as chips to run.
But for the majority of owners, that lack of performance really does start to eat at you when saxo vts's start overtaking you !
Thats why there are very few std cars.
You don't hardly pay any premium for fettled cars so you might as well go for one of these than buy a std one and try and uprgrade 3 months later costing you over a grand.
All IMHO of course.
go for a std one if you want ;-)

So what would you suggest?
I was going to look at a standard 1.8 or maybe a 111S. I totally understand what you are saying about the ‘buy one already done up’ statement. Its way cheaper to get hold of a car that has been fettled with that pay for it and do it yourself.
Bearing in mind I am looking for a car that has to return good MPG and be reliable I have been thinking of this;
1.8 or 111S
De-Cat
LSS
Stainless Exhaust System
I want to steer away from such things as head work or engine work really, I have been driving around in a non standard Cerbera and it’s a bit of a headache sometimes.

I suggest you get out there and try a few mate - until you do you're reliant on heresay (albeit pretty reliable on this forum!). Malbon makes SOME sentient points but I have a standard S1 + B&C sports exhaust and I love it. Never had a problem seeing off silly little boys in their hatchback toys and frankly there are few cars that I'd want to go above 90-100 in anyway so the top end performance on road is plenty for me.
I might get a hurricane induction kit in the new year IF I keep this car and don't have the cash to get an S2 but frankly that will be more to get it to growl louder, more than for any performance gain.
Get out there and get test driving dude!
The 111s is awesome. In good nick with LSS or nitrons and an exhaust and filter you will have a very sorted car with no disappointment of speed. This will have roughly 40bhp more than the St1 S1 though. That is about a third more power though.
S Works...I see what your saying but coming from a 4l TVR into a 1.8 Elise - I just can't see him being happy with the power output. Coming from any other car then fair enough, the std car is more than enough.
111s - a nice choice - Bonce who comes on here has a nice one for sale.

There are defo 2 types of elise owners !!!
1 type who buy toyos
1 type who buy advans.
Have to hold my hands up to the Toyos's..well Goodriches ! There are budget elise owners and not so budget
Would be nice to own your car adrian but were starting to talk about a different price bracket here. If I was spending that money then Noble/T350/Tuscan would be in consideration too.
But my car as nice as it is isn't anywhere near that bracket. And thats kinda how i like it...Giant Killer !

So So fast it'll make you pooh yourself (nearly)..you can flash 911s out of the way..ohhh yes!
nice one mate, if I only had the money to piss away....
Really? Pooh myself more than a TVR Cerbera, I think not.
Its that Poohing I am trying to move away from!
Oh name change from TVR Slags BiL ( thought it was crap! )
I'd definately go for a 111s (I'm biased of course) or a Sport 160. Once you've driven one, a standard 118bhp Elise does feel much slower out of the corners.
Also, a sports exhaust transforms the cars sound, without one you'll miss the Cerbs sound terribly. A good exhaust will keep your lugholes happy I can guarantee you.
Good luck in your search.

Now that's a familiar story - me too. Race you - who gets into an Elise first - you or me!

PS - Nice to see that you went for the rosso cerb as I did. Your not looking for a black Elise are you by any chance - if so hands off its mine!
