anyone upgraded to short shift recently?

I reckon the gear change on the elise is its weakest feature.

Has anyone installed a short shift and gear linkage kit recently?

Does it make a marked improvement, is it easy to install and how much would a dealer charge me for the job?

the answer is YES!

I have had a lot of upgrades on mine, and they are without a shadow of a nob, the best upgrade you can have for it.

When you've fitted it, just wait a week or so for it to "bed in" and you'll wonder how you managed without it.

As to costs... Its the labour that will "kill you", but i suspect it would cost around £100-£120 MAX.

Its gotta be done, lots of twisty lanes down my way, fast gear change is essential, also got track days in the pipe line. Ill probably combine the work with a service.

I don't notice the gearbox being a prob any more. Mine used to cause me grief but its loosened up and is fine now after 12k miles. Guess yours is already loose?

I used Geary's shifter and linkage kit- outstanding- as for fitting, with a set of wheel ramps and basic tools its a DODDLE to fit yourself (and I'm a banker- not a mechanic) the instructions with the kit are very easy to follow (but I bought extra lithium grease).
Makes for an amazingly fast gear change and greatly improved feel (feels "gated" rather than the rubbery/porridgy original), though still no mx-5/s2000. Can't imagine enjoying the drive without this mod!

I was put off a bit as it doesn't fit the S2 quite right, and Moose's was either installed wrong or the design is dodge on an S2 as his basically seized up.

I've had no problems with mine- on my elise S2. If its seized up, think someone forgot to use the molybdenum(numnumnum ) grease- I thought there was not enough in the supplied pack and bought extra- has worked a treat.

Just been onto elise parts, I'm dangerously tempted to have a bash myself. The destructions look pretty clear so I could save me a few bob.

IIRC Sinclaires fitted mine for an hours labour - about £40 ...not worth getting your hands dirty for that!

shak how new is your car? 5th used to be stiffer on mine as it doesn't get used as much, but its loosened up with time (12k miles now)

I have an 2001 S2 with less than 20k on it ... and most of those miles weren't in 5th.

Its not that I cant get in and out of 5th, its that of all the gears, that one can be hardest to disengage.

However, I thought this was a problem with all Elises ?? I remember see Top Gear vid of an S1 and Tiff commenting the same.

If the linkage and the side movement limiter are well adjusted it shouldnt be too bad.

Quite often set up badly from the factory.
