Is it the same charger for all TT devices? Indeed, can I not just use a universal charger from any old electrical shop and not the TT branded one?

You can use another charger providing it is rated at 5.0V and the polarity of the plug is correct (+ve in the middle).

The Tom tom adaptor is extortianate at £19.99.

Try this, just plug in the adapter that would normally go in the cigarette lighter socket of your car!
