Puntos normally have bad rear dampers. At one point brand new Puntos could be seen driving along with the back wheels flapping about.

PS I'd agree with the above; sounds like it could be roll-oversteer generated by shagged dampers

Get the car to a garage, for a full check of the rear suspension and associated bodywork.

I think you probably were. There are lots of things that can reduce the level of grip quite substantially, and if you don't recognise them and are too close to the limit of grip then you can get an unexpected slide.

The other thing that all Puntos seem to suffer from is shot bushes in the rear axle mounts. Result, unwanted rear-steer.

yup, dampers and/or bushes. Had the same thing in a citroen ZX a couple of years back except there was no chance of saving it! Not fun!

Also check your tyre pressures on the rear. Had the rear step out violently on a normally understeer happy MK4 GTI Golf, realised one of the tyres on the rear was very soft.
