Volvo V40 - Door Not Opening

My wife has a 15 plate V40.
One of the rear doors refuses to open using either the key fob, or sitting inside the vehicle and trying to open it manually.
Is each door controlled by its own motor or by some central master controller ?
Can a decent garage sort this out or is it an issue for a Volvo dealer and the associated insane costs ?

If it fails to open on the fob or manually I would say you most likely have a mechanical issue with the release mechanism.
Any garage should be able to sort it but the issue may well be getting at the inner workings of the door as it won't open.
The seat would have to come out to get the door card off and it still may be difficult to get at.
On a side note, if the door doesn't open it is an MOT fail never mind safety issue and needs sorting before MOT time.
