You could wrap a 6 or 7mm tube with fuse wire and then wrap that with ptfe tape. I've seen that done to produce brake ducting/air ducting before.

PTFE tape will conform to the wire and give you the effect you are after and yes, it can be painted. I would imagine if you use foil tape you'll get creases.

Here's a link with the PTFE technique used;

If there aren't too many bends in it, how about the appropriately sized tension spring?

A slinky spring looks almost identical to that, job done.

Ah, so something that performs similar to that rather than just looks like it. Can't you just buy some? I'm being serious, I thought they sell stuff like this cheap at any hardware shop?

Ah, I read it as 80mm. I can now confirm a slinky spring will not be suitable.

I know some people use guitar (bass i think) strings to create flexible tubing, not sure if it goes up to 8mm though.

think ive sussed it...got some normal car wiring at the right diameter , then wind fine wire around it tightly and super glue in place , then paint to taste

Now that is a good idea, any wound guitar string would be suitable in various diameters. I expect the bottom string on a double bass is quite thick!

It's not thick enough. I used guitar string for all the oil and fuel pipes on my Bf109 engine.
