That sounds ominous....

Scurries off to review the instructions...

I'm not an very experienced modeller, so maybe I didn't do it quite the right way, but you have to fit the 4 manifold pieces into the collector, the collector to a single pipe, and the pipe to a bracket off the gearbox all at the same time! If you don't then you could end up with bits where the glue has gone off that don't line up correctly...

Also take care over the rear bulkhead as I had trouble getting it to be a right angle to the floor, which then made it tricky to fit the engine correctly.

Sounds very similar to the exhausts on the Tamiya Lotus 78. Just use Araldite instead of poly cement: it'll give you chance to get the alignments right. With complicated assemblies like this it's often good to jury rig a jig to hold everythig in place before it sets.

Good model however i have the P34 in 1/12 scale - great model which looks good displayed with all the panels taken off.

Some photos (apologies for quality - iphone frown ) :

Boxtop of the model. Count 'em - 6 wheels - the coolest F1 car of all time?

IMG_0185 by tangerine_sedge, on Flickr

And this is what's in the box. Usual Tamiya stuff, rubber tyres, vinyl tubing and chome plated bits. I'm tempted to build it Matchbox stylee and leave everything unpainted...

IMG_0187 by tangerine_sedge, on Flickr

I presume parts for either '76 or '77 version (decals only for 77 version? I'll check when I get going on build).

IMG_0190 by tangerine_sedge, on Flickr

Hmmmm, aforementioned exhaust bits, I'll have to carefully dry build these and make a blue-tack/masking tape rig to check alignment.

IMG_0188 by tangerine_sedge, on Flickr

And the instructions for the exhaust bits. What could posibly go wrong?

IMG_0189 by tangerine_sedge, on Flickr

And finally, a link to a nice youtube video LINKY

Would it not be easier to make new exhaust manifolds? In my experience modifying existing ones to fit is a nightmare if they don't fit perfectly to start with. Starting from scratch and following the shape with some wire or something might be neater.

They will fit perfectly - it's Tamiya. The headers on these Tamiya DFV models stack together very nicely, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Well, absolutely zero progress on the model, but I have converted the Tamiya paint references into Humbrol. The main missing colour is the gloss white(!!) and Elf/Tyrell blue (but apparently HU14 & HU15 mixed 50/50 is spot on, and I have both of those).

I'll probably be brush painting everything, so there could be quite a lot of moaning and complaining later in the build wink

I'm on holiday next week, so if I don't start something tonight there won't be any progress for 2 weeks frown

Buy an airbrush. You only live once - go wild and crazy and spend £100!

Airbrush - pah! Hairy sticks were good enough for my grandad etc...

Seriously, I'm too lazy. I don't have enough space to leave an airbrushing station permanently set up, and I can't be bothered to set one up every time I want to do anything. I would just end up with hundreds of half completed models just waiting for me to set up the airbrush for the final coat of paint.

I've had some good results in the past using gloss enamels, so I can't see any problme this time either....

How about Halford Plastic primer and acrylic spray cans for the body then? I brush painted a few of my Tamiya F1 cars and they looked OK, but I wouldn´t do it now.

One holiday and a busy week later, I still haven't made much progress. I'm hoping to settle down this weekend to a couple of long modelling sessions and listen to radio LeMans smile

Incidently, this model seems to have a fair bit of flash and the fit in places has been poor (the silver plastic seems a little rubbery too) - certainly not my experience of previous Tamiya models...

Where is it made? My XJR-9 says Phillipines (not japan), and I've also got a few issues with it such as not very well defined moulded details, and as you said, strange plastic.

Hmmm, made in the Phillipines, looks like there are some QC issues here, so best to only choose Tamiya kits manufactured in Japan?

Still no real progress on this model. I just can't seem to make time for it, and it's just not going together very easily. I've managed to half build the engine, and assemble both rear wheels, but no major assemblies really.

besides that I've got a PM f100 awaiting paint, and a la7 awaiting paint, and a Fw189 awiting paint...

I think I've lost my modelling mojo frown

What I need, is a few days holiday with nothing to do but paint!

Mines stalled too: waiting for decals from GPM. Cant be bothered to start on the engine either without some better detail pics. No way will it be finished for the deadline. Ah well.
