ScaleX Burrell 1/16 traction engine
Discussion
I’ve been following the development of their 1/16 Burrell traction engine on Facebook and it really appeals.
All 3D printed and I think it looks fabulous.

They’ve just released a YouTube video showing assembly and it looks good. Looking forward to seeing a painted version, you’d need a decent brass paint!
Think I saw it’s £299.99 so a hefty investment but would be tempting to have a decent steam model that doesn’t weigh a ton.

Not really my subject, but a great looking model, £300 doesn't seem too outrageous if it's something you want.
Yeah that’s how I feel. Not tons of money but well built, it would be a cool looking thing. Steam isn’t really my thing either but I do love that 3D printed models are opening up some interesting new subjects

And the crispness and depth of detail massively benefits from being printed from a scan of the real thing.
Wonderful to see a hope it sells well but I'd not be confident in hitting all the natural metal finishes lots of bits n bobs will need!
Looking forward to seeing one built...bet there'll be loads at Telford!

Just bought one.
Plan is to build it for my oldest friend who is a steam engine nut.
He went to every Dorset steam engine show and used to collect and deliver showman's engines to said show.
Will be a surprise for him.
Hopefully I will do it justice
Please do a build thread! I’d be tempted in the future, so I’d be fascinated to see how it builds and how you go about painting it!Plan is to build it for my oldest friend who is a steam engine nut.

Clean up of the printing sprues will be fun.

Was there much nickel plating on steam engines? They re obviously pre-chrome mainly and I think there are shiny silver bits on them too?
I ll need to find a decent nickel when I do one of the MFH vintage bikes so if you find one I d be interested to hear.
Need to do more research.I ll need to find a decent nickel when I do one of the MFH vintage bikes so if you find one I d be interested to hear.
Hopefully the destructions will have some information

It’s the Sheffield Steam and Vintage fair tomorrow, so I could have asked…if some scrotum hadn’t stolen my catalytic converter yesterday.I ll need to find a decent nickel when I do one of the MFH vintage bikes so if you find one I d be interested to hear.

We have Weeting steam rally up the road from here in a couple of weeks which I plan to go to. The Charles Burrel museum is close too so if you need any reference images OP I could pop up there. I haven’t been for donkeys years so I wouldn’t mind an excuse to go bad!
I asked the question over on my Model Engineering forum. It’s as I thought - no plating, just copper, brass and steel that’s been finished and kept bright with oil, or has been polished through handling.
Rather than repeat the comments, here’s the thread:

These guys know these things inside-out in case you have other questions.
I love that resin model. Very tempted, but I’ve already got some parts wor a working model that I’ll probably never finish. There’s something about the proportions of a traction engine that just look perfect despite the fact that if you were to describe it in words it would sound like a complete mess.

I have found a company that sell the burrell green and red mentioned in the instructions I posted above.
Can be airbrushed but not sure if that finish would be correct
