humbrol metal cote? any good ?

noticed the model shop has some humbrol metal cote , cant find much about it online

can anyone tell me how its sposed to be used and is it any good?

I bought some about 25 years ago just to try it. You paint it on, let it dry, then you can polish it with a cloth. Worked OK IIRC, but was never sure how long the shine would last.

As near permanent as makes no difference, I've got a 23 year old kit on a shelf that still has shiny metalcote jetpipes.

Fond memories of building a mk6 lightning and painting it in metalcote...looked ok :-)

do you think it could look even over a larger model

still looking for a durable finish that can be handled for my delorean model

Have you looked at the Alclad range of metallics?

yes eric i have , theyre sort of number one on the list so far although its a bit confusing what to get as some people say use this or that black base

im also a bit concerned it wont stand up to being handled , any input on how durable it is

whats your take on the basecoat ?

for a plastic car ..primer or no ? then what black paint ?

if i get peel or dirt on the black can i sand or buff it before the alclad?

Alclad can be used on black or grey base coats. It is extremely durable in handling - compared to more traditional metallic paints.

Sorry, never done overall metallic finishes apart from restored Dinky Aircraft which was just Halfords Aluminium. Probably too grainy for what you want.

oh right , id read that you need gloss black ?

can you name some brands that work well , or anything to avoid

was leaning towards the stainless finish , but tempted to try chrome as well

Best thing is to test the various shades out on a scrap model first until you find a shade that suits. Alclad have their own website which you might find interesting.

back to the metal cote , has there ever been a how to , cant see any info on the humbrol site , i assume its just a matter of spraying a couple of coats on and the buffing when dry ?

Never sprayed it - only brush painted - so can't give any further advice.

I've never used it for anything other than small components (aircraft undercarriage legs, machine guns etc).
