As alluded to by Eric in his Shuttle thread. These are the two Revell 1/144 submarines I showed at Farnborough yesterday evening.

The first is a Type VIID U-Boat minelayer, hence the forward siting of the conning tower and the low deck structure behind it.

The second is the Wilhelm Bauer, which started life in WWII as a Type XXI U-Boat. Shw was scuttled after the war and then raised in 1956 and used as a trials submarine for the West German Navy. She was then transferred to a research unit before finally being put on display in Bremerhaven.

Interesting; I expected to find this on www.uboat.net but this is all they have: www.uboat.net/boats/nc_2450.html

This linked the name to the number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_Wilh...

I can see why Eric was so impressed

Put me on the impressed list too

They are very emphatic depictions of how the German navy were driven to make the U-boat such a vital weapon, lookit the size of that thing

Great modelling Shar thanks for showing us

I wondered if I was going to have to make "pointed" remarks to get to see themwink

Thanks guys. Perdu, I didn't take the photos of the VIID until this evening and they were a bit rushed as I had to get them up on Britmodeller and Revellations as well. I really enjoy building in this scale. Trouble is they keep distracting me from my North Carolina battleship build.

Seeing them near to the Shuttle gave me a good impression as to how big the real things were - as the Shuttle is 1/144 too.

The North Carolina model will make it when you are ready, 'til then I love seeing your "distractions".

I think I ought to try to move aside from the model of the moment some times, for instance I still have that Airfix DB5 to get going on.

Your subs look smashing, simply great

Great work as always.

Is that a blue swordfish emblem on the first one?

Thanks, yes it is. I've never been really sure of what colours the swordfish should be though. I've seen blue, black and red. I suppose I should up my research on these subjects rather than just building them, but then they would stop being quick builds.

Was it an emblem of a particular "squadron" or whatever they are called? I've seen swordfish emblems on loads of U-boats, and they are always the same general shape (eg a fairly round body).

I've just done a quick google and it appears that the Laughing Swordfish is the emblem of the 9th Flotilla sailing out of Brest. Apparently one of the most active units. The colour is a matter of great argument, it seems.
