Hi there, i was just looking for advice on this as a kit, i found on ebay you can get the 1/12 scale for 100 pounds with a controller, i also found a 1/31 scale and would like to know if this would be too small, i just want to make something!

The 1/12 is great. The wheelies are fun, and it's pretty much as fast as you'd want, given the handling (which is shocking!)

Go for it!

Fun Bus Jr has one coming for Christmas - his first 'proper' RC car. All his others have been cheap toy ones which he got frustrated with as they're not quick enough for ramps and don't like anything other than a smooth surface.

I've been in RC racing for many years. Can't remember how long this kit has been around but to be fair it doesn't matter.

Tamiya make all kind of std stuff from toys which this is to full on world championship winning stuff.

For a toy this will be fine / pretty well made ish and can be upgraded to make it better. For the right price and if it's the sort of thing your into go for it. The good thing is you will be able to order spare parts etc if required

What upgrades can be made? I believe brushless motors put too much strain on the gearbox?

It depends on what motor it is mate you get brushed or brushless in all different powers.

What motor is in it ? Just a plain silver can one ?

Nice pics mate. Tip for you spray your shells on the inside next time.

Op - its been a couple of years since I've been in RC but doubt tamya would of changed what comes with the kits.

So it will probably a basic silver can motor. Your probably best to get used to driving it first with that if you not had a car before. When your used to it you can get a better one. When you buy one you have to make sure you have a speedo that will cope with that motor. Also batteries make a big difference in the performance. The kit will probably come with brass bushes rather than bearings it's defo worth changing them.

When you build it just take care don't rush it make sure everything that moves is free ie suspension arms etc even the real top end kits sometimes have parts that need a little mod to make them fit correctly etc.

Well, it was all going so well. Won't steer anymore so off for a replacement lug (?) to enable steering again. My lad loved it though and with him now back at his Mums I've time to fix it without him missing out too much. I don't recall an impact big enough to have done it but never mind.

Oh, and it is a silver can motor.

On polycarbonate shells you paint from the inside - the lunchbox is abs (hard plastic) so he was right to paint the outside! Also they need different paints!

I have been through 4 or 5 lunchboxes and probably had one of every type of modern tamiya! Most come and go but always have a box or pumpkin in the 'garage' smile

The steering lug ? Depends what part of the steering you mean ?

If its a silver can they are the slowest motors you can get. Simple upgrade would be a 27 turn motor tht will be plenty fast enough for a car like that. Just makesure the speedo will cope with the upgrade.

Didn't realise the shells are abs. If that's the case yes you should spray from the outside

It's the "servo saver" that needs replacing I'm told - quite common, cheap and easy to fix too fortunately.

Yeah that will be just a few pounds to fix mate you will get one at most model shops but you need the correct one for your make of servo. Different makes have a diff number of splines

£3 and about 10 minutes work even I can manage. The good thing is, is that I can involve my lad with the repair so he can learn about how things work.
