Some fantastic new tool 1/72 kits on their way next year -

Highlights for me are the Vampire T11, Lancaster BII (Bristol Hercules radials), Harier GR3, Typhoon Ib and the Gladiator.
And that's only 1/72.

But they're Airfix.
I vowed never to buy another Airfix model after I had my Dogfight double Mosquito and ME262. Worst kit I've ever had, nothing fitted properly, and the entire fuselage of the mosquito was twisted. Also the decals sucked and have started falling off. I'm sure the supplied paints were wrong too as the top colours on the 262 are almost exactly the same shade.

This is the "new" Airfix. These new models are very, very nice now - and the decals are very good quality.
I know they have their detractors on here at times but that new release list is pretty impressive and the new mould kits are geting better and better - and at reasonable prices in the main.

I've just built the Spitfire XIX and I loved it. The panel lines are too deep - but the proportions are fine and the fit was pretty good. I built it alongside the Academy MkXIV - which, although it fits together well and has finer panel lines, doesn't actually look that much like a Spitfire. The Academy Spitfire XIV was definitely the least satisfying kit I built this year.
The Mosquito you built was originally released in 1973 and again in slightly modified form in the 1980s. Both versions are still available It's actually a rather nice litle kit although it lacks internal detail. I made it a couple of years ago and, with patience, it worked out fine.
The Dr has an overall low opinion of Airfix kits - although personally I think the bulk of what thay are coming out with now are little gems and will become classics in their own right over time. I'm nearly finished their 1/72 Zero and again, it is a nice neat litle kit and extremely good value.
I think the subjects they have chosen for the 2013 release schedule are fantastic and right down my street.
I don't build 1/48 as a rule but I'm sorely tempted by that Javelin.
Got the email. I am interested but experience so far has been annoying. Missed a big chunk of modelling this year due to work loads. Just kicked off again with some others.
Put my two Airfix on the go aside for the moment. They have been somewhat infuriating. I will return to them later when I am better at fettling bad kits. Mossie 1/72 and JU87 1/48 (latter just needs painting and finishing now really). Will wait for reviews on an Airfix kit before I buy now. Have an Italeri Rafale and Acadamy 262 that have slotted together sweet as a nut out the box, great for a re starter (as opposed to beginner).
Mind you, still have the Apollo stuff on me wanted list.

To be fair, the Airfix 1:72 Bf109-E4 built into a very nice delicate looking model, although it did have several fit and decal issues. Strangely the panel lines on that look fine, but the Spitfire Mk1 was unforgivable - they scaled to something like 70mm IIRC, and are pretty much impossible to rectify without filling and re-scribing.

Have a go at some of the post 2006 kits. As I said the 1/72 Mossie dates from 1973 and the 1/48 Ju87 must be from around 1978/79.Put my two Airfix on the go aside for the moment. More research next time, I saw these in the shop and bought them. I have the Revelle 1/48 mossie as well, only just started that. I will finish the the former pair at some point but the hammer of doom was being reached for at one point so put them aside.
Starting to get serious now, burnt iron ordered for the 262.
Apollo wise, seen what you have posted before (?) and elsewhere. Been looking at them but thinking I might wait until I get an airbrush.... or not.
Edit. Looking at that picture, mine will be sans undercarriage for various reasons, mainly defects. I have had a thought for a perspex prop if that makes sense. Give it a visual appearance of whizzing around as it has no legs.

Interesting to see that Airfix are now doing photo-etch too. Maybe at last it is an indication that adults are the important buyers now.
They must be very confident of their market, because their prices are increasingly hefty. £57 for the 1:48 Westland Merlin and £50 for the 1:24 Spitfire MkVb? Ouch. The 1:24 Revell Routemaster bus I bought a couple of months ago is a huge modern kit and the RRP is only £40.

The prices of the 1:72 kits on that latest Airfix release list are all over the place.
It seems that for an equivalent kit (the Typhoon for example) Airfix are now more expensive (£7.99) than the equivalent Academy kit I was looking at in my LHS this lunchtime (£6.99), It used to be the other way around.
I'm sure that with pretty much every review pointing out the terrible panel line detail on most of the latest Airfix kits, that they will address this problem sooner rather than later. If they are of improved quality, then I'd happily pay the extra to buy British, if they are more of the same, I'll not bother.
