Starting a nitro car after 2 years
Discussion
My savage x 4.6 ss has been stood for about 2 years. Now I feel like I need to get it working again. It's still in good condition and nothing external seems seized as I coated it in gt85 before it was put away.
Any special things to note? Is it just a case of starting it up as normal.?
My new glow plug starter that I only used once seems broke. Won't charge or anything. It's a thunder tiger? Doesn't seem like it designed to be fixed either. I think it could be the charger but no way of opening it up.
Does nitro fuel go off?
Is it worth a new glow plug? Any ideas which type ?
Cheers

I believe the fuel can go off as it absorbs water I think.
If it's been kept in a suitable place in a sealed container then it'll probably be alright.
My car sits for long periods in the box under my bed, and I just start it up as normal, after trying to start it and failing because the glow starters dead and having to wait for it to charge,
You can get a special oil which you put in the engine for when it's going to be sat to stop the engine seizing. Also can be better to put it away with the piston at the bottom (BTDC - bottom top dead centre) as the bore is tapered upwards.

I had a Savage 25, which sat for 18 months before I ran it again. As long as you have put a few drops of after run oil in the engine before putting it away it should be fine.
Here's what I'd do, remove the filter and clean and re-oil it. Check the glow plug (take it out and check it) - also burns off any crap that is on it. With the plug still out and the engine at WOT put some fuel in the engine (directly into the carb, not from the tank) and turn it over and do that a few times to flush it out and make sure there is no stale fuel and crap in it. Turn it upside down so any remaining fuel drains out (won't hydro lock). Re-fit the plug in the head, flush the tank and fuel tube and then start as normal.
This sounds long winded but it only takes five minutes. Mine fired first time after being sat for 18 months HPI make good models!

Pretty much as above, drain tank and wash out old fuel using new fuel ! Take plug out and turn over till fuel spraying out the plug hole ( throttle wide open finger over carb to pull fuel through ) close throttle t
Spin over few more times to get rid of access fuel then refit plug and go for it.
I used to race nitro cars and this system always worked well flushing old fuel and after run oil, also flushes bearings through nicely so there clean and smooth running.

i've got fuel that is still fine after 5/6 years, so I wouldn't bother about that.
but the simple thing is to remove the plug and open the throttle full then turn the engine over and spray WD40 into the top and the carb. this will lubricate the bottom end.
as long as this is done you can leave the engine for years.
the problem occurs because the fuel is castor based, and it'll damage the engine/plug plus eat the fuel lines.
