After being led astray by you lot and LMS I have jumped into a DX6i and Blade MCPx as a first proper heli.

Up til now experience limited to successful flying of various co-ax jobs and my hevily modified Double Horse 9100 toys.

Fist couple of flights indoors have shown the MCPx to be pretty skittish and very hard to get anything like a stable hover with the manual settings. Is it a case of turning the rates down a bit more than 70% as the book suggests or does someone have a demon beginner setup could crib. Or alternatively do I have to stop being a girl and just practice!

If this is your first collective pitch heli you will be struggling with the stock settings as they are very responsive helicopters tuned for 3d flight. You have picked a difficult first collective pitch helicopter!

I'd try a setting of 60% duel rate and 35% expo to get you off the ground and to start getting a feel for it. if that still feels twitchy, try 50% duel rates or even less just to get you hovering. But don't fly around like that or you will run out of cyclic control very quickly.

Collective pitch helicopters fly completely differently to co axial helicopters and you have to fly them the whole time, if you let go of the sticks they will crash in a second where as a co axial will just drift around flying itself. But this it the biggest rewarding challenge of flying a proper collective pitch helicopter.

sorry, forgot to say.

Due to the as3x stability system fitted to this helicopter, they don’t like hovering just off the floor or any cyclic inputs before its airborne and clear of the ground.

You need to try and get a foot in the air as soon as possible and it should then hover much better. if you get too close to the ground again it will become very difficult to hover and control.

Ace thank you I will have a play when I get home. The Double Horse was fixed pitch single rotor but only 3 channels. It worked well once modified but this is a different league!

Would I be better off with the blades with the bullets on the leading edge?

No problem, I hope you get on well with it as you have just moved up to a proper helicopter flying experience!

If you can master flying this helicopter you will have then gained the skills to fly any type of RC helicopter

I don’t think the bullet blades will make too much difference to hovering as they are designed for fast forward flight but give them a go as they might provide a bit of dampening to its responses.

Were the co axial helicopters you had 4 channel ones? If so keep them as they are still perfect trainers for finger controls like flying backward circuits round the house and perfecting nose in hovering / landing and taking off before trying it on the MCPX!

Rates set to 60% and the negative pitch removed at the bottom of the pitch curve. Now seems far more predictable even in a light breeze. This is going to be fun!
