I am looking to buy a remote control car with a budget in mind of under £100.

What I think I would like is a ready to run electric buggy such as this: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=4... . The reason being is that they seem easy to use and ideal for what I am looking to do. I would use if just for pleasure (not racing) on tarmac/gravel/grass.

As I am new to this I am looking for some advice as to as suggestions or ideas of what to get? Thanks

It looks surprisingly good for the price to be honest.

Parts back up is the usual scary point with cheap models because they will break, if you can't get spares it becomes frustrating trying to make do and mend or you give up and buy another model.

It's also a "proper" model with a seperate radio etc. It genuinely looks very cheap for what it is. But don't expect it to be that good, especially don't expect to be able to upgrade it very much.

I personally would favour a 2wd model for simplicity and reliability at the bottom end of the market, it's a pity Mardave aren't still producing the cobra cheaply as Mardaves made excellent fun models as they were quick enough to enjoy but virtually unbreakable.

I'd look around particularly at the Ansmann and clones thereof and buy the best value for money, but I suspect you'll struggle to better that model without adding £20 or so on to the price (that may be worthwhile though for a better known model.)

Avoid 27MHz, 2.4GHz should be very cheap these days.
Check HobbyKing too.

Deffo looks like good value.
If yo like it though be prepared to be looking for something better/more expensive very soon.
Myself and my lad got a £200 Maverick + another £100 on spare batteries and chargers etc. just after christmas and enjoyed it so much we now have an all out race buggy just for messing around and bashing.
I wish now that we hadn't spent £300 to discover we wanted more and just gone the £100 route instead.

You have been warned. have fun.

I did wonder about 2WD vs 4WD. They also do this model which is 2WD http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=3... . Is 4WD easier to drive than 2WD?

The first model I mentioned looks pretty good from the Youtube videos that I have seen. I did not really think about spares so will consider that. I just want something that is ready to run and easy to use.

That look like a copy of the Team Associated B4 which is a well documented and multiple winner in it's class.

Looks pretty decent .

2.4 ghz is what we all use now , so much so that 40 meg or 27 meg is so rare that you will probably never clash with anyone else .

You could go the secondhand route, have a look on the Oople website , but beware you will become addicted.

I have that exact model.

I've used it twice since Christmas, as I've struggled to use it for longer than about 6 minutes before it runs out of battery or decides for itself what it wants to do. Sometimes it just won't go forward fast, but reverse is much quicker, I think thats down to the battery. I have also done a ESC .

My plan is to buy a better battery, should keep it going for ~20+minutes.

Thanks for that information. How much is a better battery?

Any opinions on these cars?

The other half spend time researching and talking to modelsport and the original link you put is what they recommended.

The batterys are rated in mAh, higher the better. The car I have is 1700mAh, so not great, you can get upwards of 5000mAh these days. A mate of mine used to swear by single cells, and make them up himself, but I'm not sure if thats still the best route. Personally I just want to buy something and fit it. Something like this: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/ansmann-racing-battery...

It also comes with wheel controller rather than a stick, if the battery improves the car, I'll look at a new stick controller. Oh, and a brushless motor. But these are all upgrades you can do over time.

Does anyone know, if I was to purchase the FTX Vantage brushed, or a similar RC car, if I upgraded the battery to a 3800 or similar, would it make the car faster or just make the battery last longer?

Motor limits speed, so it'll just go longer.

Get a brushless motor if you upgrade!

Doesn't the motor speed depend on voltage/current up to the point that you melt the windings?

This is five quid over budget but comes with 2.4 radio. My boy has had the MT version since Xmas, which is £115. Seems to hold up to some abuse and is quick enough for a beginner. MT version is also better on longer grass - can't vouch for this buggy version but I understand all variants use basically the same chassis/parts.

It only comes with a 1800 mah battery, which gives about 6-8 minutes run-time. If you're getting a new battery as well, try to stay with a known brand. I bought a ModelSport own 5100 mah battery for my HPI and it never worked properly. They swapped it for an HPI bat and its been fine.

Good luck with your choice, we've been enjoying our cars for nearly a few months and are loving it. But like poster above says, you may want to get something more top-end. I'm always on Modelsport looking for the perfect scale buggy to buy even though my HPI Firestorm ticks all the right boxes smile

It look's pretty good but you should preffer some other nitro rc car because when you got an accident then it would be difficult to have it's spare parts or you cannot repair it yourself..

Well considered first post there.

Next time try reading the thread before posting. No-one mentioned nitro.
