Help with Peugeot 307

Hi all, im having trouble with the girlfriends 307 HDI 03 plate. It is reluctant to start hot, or cold, can take upto 4 or 5 attempts, its turning over ok just won't start, but occasionaly it fires up 1st time, very frustrating. Any suggestions would be welcome.

is there a diesel primer on the engine ?if not it could well be the pump in the tank.
