Exhaust Problem - 205 Gti

Hi chaps,

I have fitted a new standard exhaust to my 1989 Gti 205. No CAT!!

I purchased a gasket set to fit (link below)

BUT the "O Ring" Wire Gasket a) Won't fit easily, b) When I bolted it up the exhaust leaked at the join.

Would it have been better to leave the wire "O Ring" out and use the following gasket (link below) ??

Any advice appreciated.

It should be the part listed in the first link. However if it is patten it maybe a dodgy fit.
I bought a set years ago from the main dealer and had no trouble with.

I had a garage fit my exhaust and they spent a fair bit of time working on the wire gasket with a grinder to get it to fit right.

There's 2 different sizes and they're often mis-sold as GTi items when in fact they're not. I suspect this is the same.

Bit OTT when all you need is the fire-ring though Jord! Usually only a couple of quid or so from a motor factor.

I always have a job getting exhausts to seal (probably because I'm too cheapskate to buy new bits...)

If it's only blowing a little, take it apart and put it back together and it might seal properly.

It should be fairly obvious if it's the wrong one- too big and it will feel loose and be hard to locate, too small and it won't fit over the exhaust.

from experience, pattern part fire rings, don't fit aswell as genuine parts.
