identifying gearbox noise on c3 hdi

hi guys,

recently bought a c3 hdi with relatively low miles (65k) and there is a lot of noise coming from the gearbox - like a whirring noise. heres the conditions its there:

worst when on overrun
there on acceleration
quiet on cruise

it goes when you dip the clutch when driving along and is louder in the smaller gears.

Does anyone have any ideas how to narrow it down - i am assuming its gearbox? would probably be cheaper just to stick another in>?

I would put my money on the clutch release bearing, very common.
