Renault trafic dci100 fuel pump

My 03 plate trafic apparently needs a new fuel pump. The vehicle just stopped and would not start again, a Renault trained mechanic looked at it and gave me the bad news. The even worse news was that it would cost half the value of the van to fix it!!
Has anyone on here had experience of this job? And more especially how much it should cost?
