citreon transmission
Discussion
Just wanted to note that I have used the following transm. oils in my 87 turbo (citreon transm.) over the last appr. 9 mos.: Royal Purple 75/90; Redline MT90; Mobil 1 75/90 (all full synthetic). My personal experience is that the Mobil 1 was best in my transm. Of course, I guess everyone's may have particular perks, but these are good choices to try. W/Mobil 1, my transm. is much, much less notchy. Very smooth. I was also concerned, as some of you may recall, that Redline MT90 was GL4 rather than GL5. Probably no problem, but Mobil 1 seems much smoother anyway. Just my particular findings.
I have not heard of any issues with the MT-90 in the C5 box... but I can tell you that MT-90, once recommended for the MX-5 gear box, is now to be steered clear of in that car. The red Line MT-90 was creating big problems due to the fact that (for whatever reason) the sincros were getting beat up. Some folks here reported completely loosing gear mesh after only a few months...
I'm currently running Castrol out of habit in all my cars. I know a great story re. Mobile 1 however...
I preface this as dealing with the engine oil, but I would guess that the gear lube is just as good...
A friend with a McClaren rebuilt his engine. Put in Mobil 1 full sysnthetic. Long story short... a while later he tore the engine down (can not recall why) and there was still cross hatch on the engine bits from the rebuild! The engine was not wearing in! He put in some Quaker state and ran for 1000 miles... then re added Mobile 1. Three years later the engine still looks new on the inside.
To each his own...
Drive topless!!!

Cameron,
I agree that with a rebuild, you should go with organic oil for the break-in period of 500 or so miles. Mobil 1 and other synthetics are too slippery and do not allow the metal parts to wear-in against each other as should be the case. Once the break-in period is complete, you want to switch to the synthetics. This is what I did when rebuilding my Esprit a couple years ago, not a lick of problem since and the compression pegs at exactly the same as it did at 500 miles, 10k miles later, not even a 1 PSI variation between cylinders.
