The stitching on the driver's seat up near the left shoulder, is splitting on my 91 SE. Just the thread, not the leather. The guy at the autotrim shop says it's a waste of time restitching as the leather is old and would just rip.

Of course, he suggests recovering with new leather that he can do for a couple of thousand dollars.

Anyone had this problem?
Anyone have a set of tan seatcovers in good shape?

Hey Jan,
Look at the defect closely. Did the leather tear leaving little holes with rips to the edge or did the stitching break leaving little holes intact? If the former, the upholsterer is right, if the latter, he is trying to make a buck (or a few thousand) on you. Also shop around.

Hi,

Look for other upholsterers in your area. A couple thousand bucks is pretty steep by any standard. Another option is to ship them out to a shop elsewhere. Add about $100.00 to $150.00 to the job.

Maybe there are listers here who can recommend someone. There is an excellent guy here in Mpls. called Diamond Interiors, cottage business out of his basement, but his work is AAA+++.

He did a national show winner Lambo Muira SV here in town for under $2,500.00 and that was the whole interior, flawless!

He was going to do my seats for $600.00, but then I found a pair of V8 seats from a brand new (<2500 mi.) '98 that was totalled and I got the pair of seats for $400.00, so I went that route instead. I kept the stock seats and will have him re-do them someday. Keep it in mind. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
